not much new on my car as a couple weeks before the next event, so a quick update on the Lemons/Chump e30 we're working on (owned by James Spoth et al), which I'll be running with at Summit Point Hyperfest LeMons and the VIR 24-hour Chump in August.

With the wife and kids departing this morning for a week at the beach I headed up to Rockville for a jam session of e30 work. Jim took the engine out last night to do some oil pan work, etc so today's task was to put everything back in, hook it all up, and get the car running again, as well as some other tasks.

The final interior product after we painted the cage the other week and Jim painted the floors/interior safety blue:

The gauge panel we made :) Also showing our one "bling" part :)

      Ready to load engine...

      Engine in with white bay.

      exhaust

Tomorrow this car comes to my house for a week so we can do exterior paint, cosmetic touches, and perhaps build a wing for the back...

We were worried about fogging when we pulled all the HVAC stuff, but RainX/Antifog worked great for us in the rain, snow, and wet at Watkins Glen, so I'm really glad to be rid of the weight, complexity, and that thing where there's boiling water running right next to your feet that having the heater core installed entails.

If fogging does become an issue at a race, some ShopVac hose out the window works fine, and a more permanent solution I'm considering would be dryer vent being fed by a roof scoop.

How much did it all weigh?

I also saw somewhere that people were running 1 or more 12V heaters and aiming them at the dash and controlling them with a switch. I can't remember where I saw it, but they were cheapie 12V heaters with integrated fans that run like $15 at places like HF or auto parts stores. Maybe a backup plan if all else fails.

Including all the ducting and crap, 15-20lbs. Heaters would be another option, but I'd have to test it out.

Thought I'd share some pics of the Lemons/Chump car, 4 days into my paint job on it. Still a lot to go (and 2 days left before the wife is back from the beach, so really....2 DAYS!), but it's getting there. A few snaps of the unfinished product.

Rust-Oleum and 3M should freaking sponsor us...

                white side mostly done

black side a ways to go

                trunk

some blue shadowline detail on the hood, late-night mini-project.

Just red. I could not beat the price (free) so I was not choosy about the color.

Fab.... Let me consult with the guys and see what they want to do. But I know they'll want "safety blue" lol......they love safety blue for some reason.

btw, I'll steal a post from my own thread to put up a pic of Carlos's SpecE30 in awesome Condor Speed Shop livery done by KD Vinyl, because it looks damn nice!

So....I picked up another project car, with this one pretty close to where I want it for the moment.

I'll make a build thread once it gets to my house (it's at Pat Henry's up in W.Va right now since I didn't want to tow it 100 miles on a dolly with old tires).....

$200 (has good title as well)
                                1977 e21 320i non-sunroof.

Engine may or may not be any good, but I have a $150 running M42 engine and drivetrain sitting in my garage (spare for the rallycross e30).

The rust you see in the pics is basically "the rust." It's all surface, the floors and trunk and everything is amazingly solid and almost rust-free after pretty close inspection (car has been parked on a gravel pad for 7 years since it last drove). The PO says he thinks he remembers that "some work was done on the floors" about a decade ago when it was his sister's college car.

Interior is 100% complete with no signs that it has ever had a leak (it's been rainy recently, and nothing was damp in there. Trunk had a good leak and is a bit moldy and very wet, but surprisingly almost no sign of rust in there, even in the spare tire well.

All trim and brightwork is still there, so basically looks like it was well-taken care of until it was parked in 2008. Guess we'll see.

The plan is possibly to turn it into a Chump/Lemons car in the short term and built toward a trackday toy in the longer term I think. We shall see...

we had to use a pair of e30 wheels on the back and the two e21 spares on the front (e30 wheels won't clear the e21 brakes) for the tow since the stock Alpina-look wheels had rotten tires..
                                <img src="http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j85/irish44j/BMW%20320i%20e21%20build/DSCF5950.jpg[/img]

                                on the road

a few shots of the car
rust on the hood is not nearly as bad as it looks

                                ditto on the trunk

interior in remarkably good shape except for a broken tilt lock mechanism on driver's seat (shocker...)

Also this morning finished up the paint on the Lemons/Chump e30 and it departed my house to one of the team member's place for some other work..
