    Project 1987 Zinno Vert

I have seen everyone with their projects and figured it was time to get mine into the mix. It is nothing special. Well, it is to me as I am absolutely ADDICTED to e30s. This is actually my third one.

A little history behind it. I worked at another KIA dealership as a service advisor. I had a customer bring a 2000 KIA Sephia on a hook because of a severe misfire issue. Found out the issue and was going to cost the owner about $1500 total to fix the car. The car had 64000 miles on it and she was going to have pick-n-pull come get it. I offered $400 for the car and she sold it to me. $200 in parts and labor later(Working at the dealership has it's perks). Drove it for a while and found a young couple selling or trading my BMW on CL. Tey looked at my car and I looked at theirs and decided on a trade. I basically got my 87 vert for $600. Now, the BMW had been in a bit of a boo boo. The girl who owned it rear ended a pickup and bent the front a little.

Here are a couple of pics after I bent the hood down to at least get it to close:

Notice the 4x4 ride height too.

I started sorting out some of the smaller issues. Took off the grills and bent the core support out as best I could and got a new high beam headlight for it. Then I acquired a set of E36 M3 springs and swapped them in, bringing the front nose bleed ride height down about an inch.

After front end repair and spring swap:

The top is in fairly decent shape:

I found that there was a pretty good leak that was allowing water into the rear floorboard area of the car. After some investigation, I found the source of my water leak. I found that the trunk lid had rusted completely through under the third brake light on the lid. Hence my next mod. A buddy of mine on here, Schnitzer318is, has a calypso coupe that he is stripping to autox. He had a slick top lid in damn good shape that also had an "is" lip spoiler. I promptly acquired it from him and he even helped me install it. He is a wiring guru, and was able to bridge across the resistor board for the brake light in order to get that annoying ass brake light check bulb to go off on the check panel.

Here is a pic after the trunk lid mod and the tint I have just put on:

The interior leaves something to be desired. The PO at some point decided that it would look cool to two tone the interior. I HATE IT! I want it back to all one color.

I am currently in the process of locating the door pulls and map pockets. I dont have a pic to show it, but they spray painted the rear cards and the boot lid vinyl black. I am going to strip the vinyl off the boot lid cover and redo it in beige, then source some beige rear cards.

I will keep this thread updated as I progress. It will be a slow process as I have to do things as I acquire funding. I am looking forward to getting this vert back to its formal glory.....

When you strip the vinyl off the boot lid you will find adhesive covered factory paint. Clean off the adhesive with some mineral spirits or what ever you can that wont damage the paint and Presto you have a beautiful color matched boot lid!

Thanks for the kind words......I am definitely going to strip the vinyl off the boot lid and clean it up proper to reveal the hidden paint underneath. The plans also involve shadowlining the car.

I picked up some bits and pieces this past weekend at pick n pull. I did some tinkering today at work with getting some of the bits on and I will post pics a little later of before and after.

looks like you're off to a great start! you can buy your paint in an aerosol at automotive touchup if you want to give painting your trunk a try.

I am probably going to get a can of it from paintscratch.com to get it to match for the time being until I get all of the mechanics of it knocked out.
My only issue is that I want the lip spoiler to match the trunk. Does paintscratch offer a paint with the flex agent in it already????

So, it has been a few since my last post. I have since acquired a clean tear and cut free beige carpet for my car courtesy of DJ Buttchug from the vert he is parting out. I have located new armrests and rear cards in beige as well. I am on my way to a one color interior again!!!!! I am also in the process of painting my coupe trunk lid to match the car. Also in the works is basic maintenance I have been putting off. Timing belt and water pump along with a full suspension rebuild. I have also sourced a reman steering rack from the rack doctor so I can get my power steering back. As soon as I am done with the trunk lid, I will post pics...

              Off to bed!!!!

Well, Things are still slow going here. I did manage to get around to ordering some more parts. Some have come in and some are on their way. I said in an earlier post that I had sourced a better carpet for the car, but that didn't pan out. Not the guy's fault and I commend him for being upfront and honest about the carpet. It had mold and mildew from a leaky heater core up front and the rear had a mouse nest underneath and they had chewed up the rear. Oh well, the search continues. The guy with the carpet (DJ Buttchug (Still not sure what that means)) had a nice set of rear cards in damn good shape for my car. He sent me those and refunded part of my money for the carpet.

Here is one of the rear cards. They were a little dingy, but hey, a great price from a great guy and it wasn't anything that couldn't be cleaned up.

                Right outta the box:

                All nice and cleaned up:

I also got the trunk lid painted. Just need to color sand and buff and then attach the freshly painted spoiler. Need to get pics when I get to work tomorrow.

I also got some door pulls today, along with a working "i" cluster, B25 lower end, control arm bushings and H4 headlights. Will post pics of those items tomorrow as well.

Here is a parting shot of the control arms I just got in. They are nothing fancy. I got them off of fleabay for $75 shipped. I am not looking at tracking the car. If they fail in 2-3 years, I got my money's worth out of them.

I am still waiting for the strut mounts and timing belt kit to come in. I am trying to get all the parts I need for the related jobs that I am about to tackle so I can get everything replaced while I am in there.

                More tomorrow!

Still haven't managed to get pics of the spoiler yet, but I got another box today......

More maintenance parts. I ordered 2 new strut mounts for the front, timing belt, tensioner and new spring. Not real glamorous, but getting me closer to getting my suspension renewed.

                  Pics:

                  Strut mounts

                  Tensioner and spring

                  Box with everything

I also met guy that is local here that took his entire tan interior out of his vert and put a mint black interior in. He saw this thread and sent me a message saying I could HAVE his tan interior so I could finish the full tan re-conversion on my car. AWESOME!!!! Budget build is still chugging along. My plans are to get the new strut mounts on the salvage yard find Billies in good strut housings tomorrow or so, and do the interior conversion this weekend. I also am going to order a new water pump and cam seal so I can get that knocked out as well.

                  More to come.....

did you get new seats? If so you can put rear head rests in the back now.

No seats, but going to the dealership in the next couple of weeks to get the rear headrest brackets and then locating good tan headrests for that mod.

cool. It looks like it got moldy inside.

To be honest mine might have a touch of that its been rained on. But whether its good or bad the black vinyl hides it. Those peices are actually kinda cheap crap no offense to anyone, its like cardboard stapled to vinyl.

youve got a carpeted dash thing just like mine. its not the same brand i can tell cause mine hangs over to the glove box.

anyhow looks good. looks like mine somewhat. nicer paint though and an auto with tan...

My interior is pretty straight right now except the split on the back seat im going to hide with some rear head rests so Im antsy about getting some.

Ill put some miscolored ones in temporarily cloth or whatever, just so its set up and the work is done.

Yeah, I think it got moldy inside too. I am going to order a new top soon as mine is missing the "headliner" material. It is just bare canvas so it weeps when it rains. I also need new seals, then new carpet. I am still trying to source a carpet for it, but no dice as of right now.

I would try redyeing the seats before getting new ones.

but I dont see if theres tears. even so I would try redying it unless theyre broken.

as crazy as this sounds because yours are so light now I would experiment with changing the color. or tan is fine obviously.

But a saddle brown e30 seat would be pretty pimp.

I was thinking about re-dyeing them to match the tan panels I just put in the car. The seats were redone a while back by the PO and they are vinyl, not leather. The stitching is coming apart on the top of the rear seat back at the seams and also on the top outside of the driver side seat. I am not happy with the fit of the vinyl, but for the time being will probably repair the stitching and just dye them. Saddle brown does sound bad ass though..hmmmmmmmmm.

                              On to the pics!

Here are a few shots of the interior this morning before I gutted the car:

I didn't get any pics of the car gutted because I am sure everyone and their brother has seen a naked e30.

Here are the after pics. I definitely need to dye the seats. And get a crack-free dash. And a new top. And a new paint job. The list goes on....

I still need to strip the painted black boot lid covering off and install new tan to match.

Here is a shot of the deck lid that I recently painted to match the car until I can afford to have it repainted professionally. I used Rustoleum Regal red and cleared it with Rustoleum Crystal clear. I sanded and painted the spoiler with Rustoleum Bumper trim paint. The bumper trim paint already has a flex agent mixed in so it shouldn't crack.

Here is what I started with. I don't think the person who painted it before used the right paint.....

Finished product. I finally got to install the new trunk roundel my loving wife got me for Christmas.

Now, I need to get to work on the mechanics. I have a new water pump coming along with rocker plug seals, cam seal and valve cover gasket. Waiting on those parts so I can tackle the timing belt job, then on to suspension.
