E46 M3 cluster swap

thanks guys, it turned out pretty much the way I wanted it to. I can't wait to plug it in the car and see those gages move for the first time in 2 years. :p

I saw it got reposted on facebook, lol. I'll probably post a public build thread on it eventually but I can't see many people doing these.

I have a queue of other people's projects to finish and then I'll be back to wiring this one up. I was pretty wiped out this weekend, came within an inch of heat stroke and I'm still not fully recovered.

This subject just came up again, and I dug up this thread.. man, I hardly remember any of this, lol.

Cluster still looks the same as it did in the last pic. Just need to finish internal wiring - but I'm going to rethink that a bit. The wiring was really complicated, and since I'll be using an MSV70 that can output the right CAN messages to the cluster, I can probably leave out a few wires to make it simpler.

Cool thing is, MSV70 supports the LED rev limiter (because MSS70 did, which was used in the Z4M, and they are 99% the same). All I need to do is set it to CAN-11H mode and fill in the maps..

My car is an e28 and has only one level sender. I've trimmed down the e46 level senders to try and squeeze them in but the hole is really small. My car is running but I'd like to get the cluster fully functional before I drive it around

it would work regardless if you have one sender or two.

it's way OT, but if you want to use the E30 fuel level senders with the E46 cluster, you can use an op amp circuit to adjust the signal. The speedo can be programmed to work with the E30's 9-tooth speed signal (using the original speedo PCB as a conditioner). I have a cluster about 90% done, but waiting for my motor to be in the car before I finish.

Looks like your cluster swap was pretty involved. Mine wasn’t too bad but I had fun putting the interior back together after months of it being apart and swapping out a cracked dash and heater core. Thanks for the op amp suggestion. Going to do some research and try it out.

I'll have to dig up the schematic and parts for the level sender part of the circuit. You can probably leave most of the board empty since it looks like you're using something else to trigger all the lights etc.

You'll have to measure the voltage output of the E28 sender (empty and full), and then adjust the op-amp to match it. There's an op-amp calculator I used on TI's website somewhere, I'll try to find that too - basically you enter the input/output voltages you want and it tells you what values to set the trim pots to (plus any bias resistors etc).
