Definitely use the 6 speed. I had a 5 speed swapped B40 car, and the second gear synchro met it's demise pretty quickly...This was with fresh fluid too. Not a fan of those units.'91 "318is" slick top M50 turbo

went over the block, but not taking it to a machine shop. this is supposed to be a budget build...kinda. and I guess I'm going 6 speed with a 4.10.
also figured I'd grab a few more pictures of my car as I've never really posted any. Sorry for the crappy pics. Its my beater/DD so don't expect much.
My cute little badge to piss people off(yes, its staying along with the 318is badge after the v8 swap)
Engine bay
finally put up a christmas gift I got from a funny guy.
Alright, enough pic whoring for the night.

Actually, the 6 speed syncros are much more notorious for problems than the 5 speeds. Check out any of the E34 or E39 forums and see how often there is talk of bad syncros. The 5 speed is a pretty stout unit... it's the same trans that's in the E36 M3, just with a different bellhousing. Those cars get tracked and abused pretty heavily and the trans is not known to be suspect. Sounds like your 5 speed's second gear syncro was abused and going south before it found it's way into your E30 swap. Many more high performance clutch options with the 5 speed too...
