E30 M3 -> E30 318is...

I drove the butchers 318is the other night and it is very similar to the m3. Obviously the m3 has more power but they feel the same in that they are both well balance and peppy with short gearing. Neither are straight line performers. These 16v e30's are meant to do more with less. I can see how some prefer the m42 318 over the 325. Just depends on what kind of driving experience u prefer. I think its hard to beat the 325is cuz it does everything well. The cars are just different flavors.

THANK YOU, that's an expert description as to how the m42's are built, now just out of curiosity - was the m42 you drove stock? It's an entirely more ferocious animal with the m20 flywheel (especially when it's lightened!)

Butcher's 318i M42 had a COP conversion, lightened flywheel, custom exhaust and chip I believe. Gotta be good for 150-160HP.. Not bad for a car that weighs 2500lbs or so. Too bad performance options are somewhat limited on the M42 powerplant. I know Downing Atlanta has a supercharger that works with some mods but it's a tad expensive for what you get. Too bad no one has developed any lower cost solutions for the M42. Maybe DC Colegrove will read this and develop something. =]

Just making a little list here...

Things wanted/needed: immediate wants/needs
- M-Tech 2 Wheel + spacers needed
- antenna (current antenna is stuck halfway up)
- keyless entry
- euro plate filler
- mount weaves

Just a little work in progress list. I've already made a few purchases and changes. Unfortunately the car is sitting at a body shop for an estimate on the hail damage repair...
