The car is looking good. I like where you are headed with this, as I am doing a lot of the same refresh work, except I'm starting with a transmission swap. I know what you mean about "not being this far into any of your cars before".

Also, if you ever have too many people offering you bilsteins for $200, let me know.

How bout a fresh valve cover? Geez this thing is nasty.

I post pics when I have the finished product. :D sneaky...

Good news today I found out that the head is in spec and doesnt need to be resurfaced. So tonight removed the old water pump and I started cleaning the surface of the block. I still need to finish cleaning the head before I can put it back together.

I also decided to install new power steering lines because the originals that are on the car have a slow leak. It's a pretty quick upgrade and chance to flush the fluid. I did new lines on my E36 this summer and I'm still pleased with how it came out.

        Good news on the head!

I think the PS lines are next on my list too...I don't think there is any rubber that can hold up for 22 years.

          Update!

I got the everything back on the car starting this morning from a bare block. The head is super clean, the valve cover is painted, the intake manifold is painted, the block was degreased. I was feeling great and everything was going really smooth. No hold ups at all - until...

We filled it up with coolant aaaaaannd it started to leak from the water pump.

          omg such a bummer.

So we tore down the front of the motor and are going to finish tomorrow with some Permatex silcon sealant. Oh well. Live and learn. It was completely my fault. I knew the gasket was torn when I installed it. I should have used my better judgement to know that wouldn't hold.

          I'll get some pics tomorrow.

                FUCKING. DONE.

That was a wild ride. I'm really glad I did it my self. I spent $245 total for parts, coolant and lots of brake clean.

Looks good, did you just use brakleen to get that valve cover so fresh? Are there any parts to strictly avoid using around brakleen?

The cover was cleaned and cleaned and then painted. :)

Non chlorine brake clean is what you want. The chlorinated type with discolor any plastic it touches.

Just replaced the fuel filter and in/out lines. It was a breeze except for getting old lines off! They were so hard and brittle it was ridiculous.

I used OEM BMW lines and a Bosch filter to replace some random made in USA shit. I felt the number of cranks to start lessen I'm sure of it. The old one was probably way over due for replacement.
