Project thread for Ruby, my '89 Zinno E30. (24 valves in 24 months)

I bought this E30 about a year and a half ago as my first E30. I was driving an E46 330i at the time and sold the E46 soon after because I liked the E30 so much. It was in pretty poor condition when I got it, faded paint, dents here and there. It started off almost completely stock except for some stupid things... It's an '89 325i but the previous owner swapped in an eta M20 supposedly because something bad happened to the original M20. So it's an eta engine, both eta bottom and eta head, but with the "i" bolt on parts like the "i" intake and exhaust manifolds, cooling system, exhaust, ecu and harness. So it's a strange thing, but nonetheless it's very fun to drive and got me obsessed with E30s.
I did a few mods here and there like Bilstein shocks + H&R springs, short shifter, wheels + tires, and brake pads, rotors, and SS lines.

I kept it in my dads garage in NJ over this past winter while I drove my other E30.
We just brought it down last week to my new house in MD.
    Getting it on the trailer

My E30s finally both together in my garage. My own house and 2 car garage with 2 E30s, what more could I want in life:D I just bought this house and moved in about a month ago and it's a dream come true for me at this age.

Here's a pic I took tonight. I'm going to take the M20 out soon. No rush though, I still don't have a 24V engine lined up. I bought an engine hoist from harbor freight yesterday and when i was putting it together I discovered it's short one wheel, so I have to sort that out with them.

I'm not sure what will be going in yet. Could be anything from an M50 to an S52 depending on the circumstances. I just want a 24V engine. I've driven M50NV, M50TU, and S52 swapped E30s and they were all great and plenty quick. I like the way they rev up so smooth and fast. I already have a fast E30 and i'm not too concerned with outright power, it my be faster or slower than it, we'll see. I'm doing this for many reasons, a big one is that I just want to do an engine swap. I bought my M30-E30 already swapped. I want a project, a goal, something to work on and accomplish.

This will be an ongoing project thread for the 24V swap and whatever else I decide to do to it. I'm in no rush to make a lot of progress very fast, i'll be casually working on it as I get what I need for the swap and as I feel like it.

Oh and the E30's name is Ruby because it's red. my gf named it.:p

You'll be plenty happy with an M50TU, I know I was coming from an ETA motor. Great looking car.

S52 prices are pretty high right now.

Not much of an update but I finished putting together the engine hoist after I got the damn missing wheel from harbor freight. I got a load leveler for it too.
I didin't get an engine stand though. I don't think I really need one if i'm not going to be taking apart an engine.

I'm ready to start taking out the m20. If i'm not busy i'll do it this weekend.

Thanks. The garage is perfect. Concrete block walls painted with brick on the outside, 2 car doors, 1 side door, and 3 windows. With 2 E30s in there you can see I still have plenty of space in the middle, and I still have a lot of cleaning up and organizing to do.

I got this hoist because it's what i've seen everyone else use and it seems to work fine for everyone else. I haven't heard any bad stories and it got good reviews. Only thing that really pissed me off was the missing wheel that I had to go all the way back for. I thought the chain looked pretty solid though, what makes you think you can't trust it?

Looking good man! I'd love to stop by once the cars done, if you'd have me. Also, if you ever do need an engine stand, Spencer has one that just sits in the garage, so he'd be the person to ask.

Took off the accessories and stuff. The m20 is almost ready to come out.

I'm thinking I want to do an OBD2 engine, possibly an M52. M52's are going for around $1000 while S50 and S52 are going for around $3000. It makes more sense and seems more simple to just keep it OBD2 and get the non essential emissions and security features flashed out. The OBD2 engines are newer as well and have updated valve retainers.

Engine is out! It's about time! I took it out tonight with dnick. Pulled it out a little bit then took the trans off then it was easy just lifted it straight up. Way easier than if we tried to get it out with the trans attached.

I'm going for a minimalist engine bay. No AC, no PS, no sound deadening, tucked wires, and I really want to get this radiator but it's $$$$.
