Diary of a Grungy 86 Cosmosblau Sedan

After discovering that my previous project car had a terminally bent frame I found this in the local ad paper. $1000 later-

I introduce my new backup car/project, a 1986 325 Cosmosblau Sedan with a 5spd. Though driving it home was a bit frightening due to very bad ball joints, defunct speedo, and failing clutch slave cylinder, I love this car already. Despite those issues it runs great and the perfectly straight and rust free body make up for everything else, Though the paint has seen better days, the car seems to have zero body work. Odometer died at 116k, carpet is what I would consider toxic, paint is faded, and the engine bay is probably one of the dirtiest I've seen. Enough with words, on to photos. If you would like to just browse all current photos just check out the photobucket here: http://s139.photobucket.com/albums/q...DVE/86%20325e/
As I purchased it on the 19th of December 2012.

Sitting proudly in my swamplike second driveway.

Definitely going to need a new muffler, Sorry about the terrible photo. It was drizzling outside and a bit difficult to take pictures. I could have been patient and waited till the rain stopped but no, that just isn't my style.

Super rust free tow hook area, not sure how that happened but I'm happy about it.

Some engine bay shots, everything is covered with a thick layer or dust. Looks like somebody sprayed down the entire engine bay with penetrating oil and it just collected dust like a magnet.

Nice cracked tail, soon to be repaired.

    Second round of pics

    Exterior shots

I've been wanting a early model for a while and I think this car will fill that void nicely. As for direction of this project, I don't have one, I'm just going to figure it out as I go. Though, It will not be an "E" for very long...
This car will be an organ donor in the near future.

My trucks engine bay looks cleaner even after running through muddy fields up to a cabin. At least with that damp carpet you'll have the oh so desirable damp e30 smell all the time.

Someone was just selling a grey or black carpet on here for cheap iirc...

It's dirty, but I see lots of potential. Plus it's not autotragic

I was surprised at how straight the car was, I assumed it would have some issues but the guy was right when he said it wasn't dented up or rusted.

It looks to me like somebody has sprayed penetrating oil or something similar all over the entire engine bay, over time it has just soaked up the dust. That is my best guess.

I hope to save the carpet but it looks like it is going to be tough, I may switch the interior to black if I don't have too much success with cleaning up the carpet, I have a set of houndstooth door panels and I actually have some carpet that was reserved for my other project car. I'll just have to gather up the other bits to make it a complete color change.

I would agree, There was a time when I wouldn't have been too into the lighter blue but my taste have changed over the years. I've been viewing some other cars this color and they look great.

You bet! It may be a little while, I've got a hoard of other things to sort out first.

Transmission was definitely the other second major selling point for me. :)

Taking the weather into consideration, There really isn't much I can do outside at the moment so I opted to take this time to work on a set of door panels I saved from one of my old parts cars. I've become fairly sure I'll be swapping the interior out with black so I'm going to get these houndstooth panels repaired and cleaned up.

M-Tech wheel from the parts bin. I'm just itching to get something started on this thing.

I love "back-from-the-grave" builds like this.
Good Luck; this thing looks in pretty good shape to begin with. Mantainence then interior fixer-uppers. Have fun, cause I definitely know I am with my build haha

I wish I knew some more history of the car but the previous owner had only had it for about 6 months and it seems like he just acquired it to be a work car. He drove it until it needed some major maintenance done then decided to sell it. I'm pretty sure he may have thought I was somewhat crazy because of how excited I was about it. To him, it was just a dirty old work car.

I'll be ordering up all the basic maintenance items very shortly, I'm looking forward to it. :) I've already ordered the control arms and slave cylinder. Hopefully the weather will give me a break so I can actually get some work done to it. I was supposed to have my metal garage/carport delivered today but I was informed yesterday that it will be another two weeks before they show up. It was nice of them to let me know that after I tore down my old shed and stacked the contents out in the yard with a tarp in preparation for delivery of the new building.

I'm still creating a list of other parts to order.
