Ran through some stuff on Saturday and got new rotors and ceramic pads for the front installed.
Figured out the random oil leak coming from the oil filter housing wasnt just the gasket to the block but also the pressure relief to the oil cooler which was an interesting job. Not hard but frustrating as soon as oil coated tools and parts and made keeping tension on the spring frustrating.
Looks like there's a tiny leak from one of the seals in the transmission. Must have been installed incorrectly or had some grime interfere with sealing since it was all new upon reinstallation but that's one of the minor issues to resolve.
Finally got to install a 5 channel amp for speakers and the impending install of my luke box. Just didn't want to hog up the trunk before I embark on the brodeo trip. That thing is going to stuffed with tools just in case....

Because this shit happened last night!

Pop goes the weasel cause the weasel goes pop.

Somehow some non fuel injection hose was used and it finally ruptured. So good thing it happened then and not while driving south.

wow yeah dodged a bullet right there. Sketchy workmanship to use non-FI hose for that. If you were driving on a hot day and didn't realize it, your engine bay could've pulled a cheech and chong and gone up in smoke!

Well after some fun down at the brodeo and a few weeks of cruising around home the damn engine is causing some issues. Driving home from work it died taking off from a traffic light. Pulled over on the side of the road and noticed smoke when cranking and wouldn't idle unless throttle held open. Feels like something is causing high internal friction :( guess it's time to tear down and start over

Have you tested for any fueling/metering issues? Internals seems like the last place to look for something like that.

Fuel is right on point, went through and looked for a loose connection or something unplugged. Testing compression and leak down next but with the sudden increase in the amount of smoke coming out of the exhaust I'm not too hopeful.

Grabbed the HF compression tester and then realized I should have used some thread locker on the adapter as it was left in #6. So to start @ 6 cold and dry I had 110 psi. I know this thing can read VERY low so once I fish out the adapter I'm hoping to see something similar across the board. Still can't put together why it seems to be binding up without any kind of knock or other unusual sound. Only other thought is something is caught in the flywheel so will be popping the inspection plate off to check. I just really don't want this motor to just have up and blown within 2k miles of being in use.

Got another compression tester from my friend and numbers ran consistent across the cyls even when wet. Assumption now are bad rings. Tore into everything this week after work and gasket was fine. Pistons were VERY caked furthering the ring failure theory.

Got the number of a local machinist to talk to about what he has the capabilities of doing. Thinking bore over and +1 rings but this would be my first complete engine built (this motor had only been a head refresh)

                Any pointers/suggestions/told you so?

One working car at a time. It's apparently a curse, especially with e30s.

Some shots from this guys garage/shop. The block is from a 1916 ford. Brought over the entire m20 machining specs so he can measure and see where we can tweak things.

Best options and source for bearings rings or a whole kit?

Everything checked out on the crank, rods, and pistons. Looks like it was a combination of rings failing and valve seats being out of spec.
The guy called me yesterday and read me the valve seat installation procedure: head at ~+170 and the seat at ~-270. He couldnt stop laughing about that.
Anywho, should get everything back next weekend
