Let there be more BLUE E30s

Let me just start by saying how helpful this forum is. Ive been on here for many months growing my knowledge and love for E30s. I have only posted a few times however, all that is about to change.

Im on my 3rd e30, and after my first died, I decided to start a little project. A little over a year and a half ago, I was introduced to this.

    Theres Dan! LOL

A 91 318is Slicktop in need of a little work. I had to save her, THANKS DAN! (MKowned)

The initial idea was to make the body perfect and revert it back to its original Alpine II, but then I got thinking. Thought of Matte White, since the bay was still white. Then I figured I'd spice things up a little and add some Blue Pearl to the Alpine. This was the goal until I found this: Custom PPG color called
Star fire (Supernova) Blue Pearl. I dont know much about paint but apparently it has whats called 4 layers and an ass ton of pearl and flake? Im just in love with the color personally.

A fairly wild color that should fall right between Estoril and Avus. It has depth as well as flake and pearl. I was lucky enough to be close to the owner of PPG/Kayfield Paint in my area as he is a Shareholder with the brewery I work for. He hooked it up BIG TIME and I only ended up paying 1/8th the price for a gallon and a half of this stuff.

While the color decision was being debated upon, the car was at my buddies shop for a while. We decided to pull the engine and do this while we were bored:

We are building what would be an 8-point cage I believe. welds from the rear frame to the "behind the seat" hoop with a cross brace, then hooped up towards the foot well, then up through the firewall to the strut tower braces (yet to be completed). Upon test fitting everything AFTER the cage in the cabin was built we realized that the door panels fit perfectly ironically and the seats will also be snuggly cinched into place with very little spacing.

Pic of the interior and the seats, not door card color (whats in the DD currently)

Seats going in once shes completed

We sprayed the jams and the outer fender wells as well as the inner doors and the underside of the fenders.

I think I like the color! What do you guys think?

Heres a pic of the lock arrangement area with a mock black door panel clipped in for a color reference.

Of course all these pictures of the paint have a bit of dust on them since the car sits most of the week with no one there. Overall I am very very VERY impressed and extremely excited.

The car's mission is to be a fun track rat with DD potential for really nice days. The car will have IS skirts, NOS Mtech 1 Wing and slightly pulled/rolled fenders. Everything else will be basically stock externally besides, (if possible) Apex Arc-8 17x9 Concave wheels with 235/40 star specs squared. Ill be running the Bastard kit from GC with something like 550/700lb springs and e36M front set up with e36ti rear arms and hubs. A brand new 2.7 Linear rack (PS delete), A custom 3.67LSD from something euro (I forget) that has had lock increased to 85%. Of course all the mounts will be derlin or poly, Treehouse cabs and possibly Brembo front BBK. Something like an OBD1 S52 or a turbo'd/built M20. Tough decision.

Im all about linear power bands for the track but turbos really do put smiles on faces.

Since the bay has been semi-shaved we are going to have to relocate a few of the accessories, ABS and the washer well to the blank battery spot. Unless I run a turbo ill need a spot for the WM, so Ill have to figure something else out.

Any and all responses are welcome and I will update as things progress.

    HAIL TO THE BLUE E30s!

    Thanks for checkin her out,
    Alex

I love it when people start with a simple fix it plan and derail to an all out love of the car! Good luck and go all out!

Please don't daily a car with a cage in it.

Are you going to add a rear diagonal bar behind where the seats will be? Many clubs will want that in a caged car if you're going to take it out on the track.

              Harness plans?

We added a diagonal bar in to increase the rigidity.

The car will see some track days in the future, as far as a harness goes, A buddy of myne has a few Schroth harnesses lying around from his days at Pocono. I may grab one of those in the next few days to mock up with as well.

What other mountings would I need for the harness itself? two bolt holes for the lap restraints along the floor below the seats?

So, you lay down base, pearl, flake and clear? is that what you mean by 4 layers?

                        It looks awesome

That paint's going to look awesome!

Regarding the cage, it sounds like you may ever want to run in get to an idea of what you need, and look into the rules for their cage-building guidelines. Hell, even building to Spec-E30 cage rules would give you a good starting point. There's nothing worse (well, maybe) than spending all that time and money on a nice cage, then it not being legal for anything you want to run.

Thanks man, my paint guy said that is has layers of different hues in the paint. Maybe different shades of pearl? Yellows, greens, blues and purples. Possibly under different lights the colors would be brought out? I dono, but I'm guessing we'll find out.

In terms of the cage, my buddy has built certified cages for guys who have run in the NHRA and sub 9 second cars. Of course thats not what the cars intention is. Also, Not tooting his horn, nor meaning to offend anyone but for what the car is for I think it'll be fine. Something I can auto-x on the weekends and run track days every now and then, I'm hoping it should suffice.

Don't really wanna run right next to someone on the track in a competitive way with this paint or the time invested... So not really looking to run in spec-e30 to be honest.

Thanks for all the comments guys! Keep them coming! I'll try to find a few more pics of the other work done in the mean time.
