it would be neat to run it, but it would be even neater to not have to do this swap twice.

Doglegs are for the most part too fragile shame because they are more fun. Honestly sell it and don't look back. Thoughts are sell to a 2002 guy doing a 5 speed conversion since it's an early box correct?

you know, I went out in search of any documentation showing that doglegs are more fragile than regular boxes a while ago, and turned up nothing except people saying that they've heard doglegs are fragile. There were some refutations, and the most reasonable thing I've read was to the tune of "doglegs are as strong as a standard transmission, but they require fluid changes a lot more frequently due to lower internal clearances."

It is true that the dogleg I have is a getrag 245-based unit, so it has smaller shafts and gears than a 260...

anyway, got the auto out, got the manual trans in. sat around satisfied, until I saw the throwout bearing sitting on the floor next to some shifter stuff. lesson learned: stop when tired.

OMG that would make me toss the towel in for the night if I forgot the throw out bearing as well.

Honestly the 245 would be great behind an M10 advertise it over on 2002faq and I imagine it will be gone in a week. There's a B6 2.8 E21 in my town that has that transmission but it's dead and he doesn't want to spend money to fix it. I feel bad for the car since it's a nice car too.

yeah, I pretty much facepalmed, took the car down, rolled it into its spot and went home.

            the dogleg I have won't fit on an M10 - it's a non-detachable-bellhousing M20 unit.

You are not missing much IMO. The M20 CR gearboxes have basically the same first gear as the overdrive gearboxes (way too short like most BMW's of the era) unlike the 2002 CR boxes which can be had with some f-ing sweet, tall first gears and wicked close gears. On a cammy 4 cyl those 'boxes are sex.

The e21 CR like you have is "supposed" to be stronger (gears) than the older 2002 units. I sold my last one (M20) for a G and the guy was tripping over himself to give me the money.

That sounds like a plan, then. Just have to get it checked out.. which means I'll need to find a guy qualified to know up from down inside one of these.

Also, grabbed some of this stuff:

and went to town on a few test spots of the car. Good news! looks like the paint is at least sort of salvageable in places. There are some dings that have been poorly touched up, but the places where the paint is original (and badly oxidized) can be brought back.

spent an hour or two in the most uncomfortable position possible to swap out the pedals and throttle cable. Clutch master is installed and plumbed, slave is ready to go, I've located a small-giubo output flange and a driveshaft.. I think it'll be rolling tomorrow night, at which point the smog adventure begins.

                  pedals and UUC clutch stop:

here's a fun one, the engine is listed as a 3.2L on the BAR federalization sticker:

not really sure what that implies for the smog process.

trans in! there are gears! the clutch does clutchy stuff!

scouring pnp for a big-giubo driveshaft tomorrow, and then it'll be functional.

Got the trans buttoned up, CSB swapped for a new one, driveshaft, heatshield, exhuast mounted, went for a test drive, success!

                            some details
                            - the transmission was a big-giubo-output-shaft version, I had a small giubo driveshaft. Flange swap happened with no problem at all.
                            - I adapted an early sheet metal console into a DTM-style shifter setup, and installed my old e30's UUC shifter. It's real nice and solid now, notchy short throws and pretty close to the steering wheel.
                            - The S50 clutch and flywheel (and starter) setup is pretty neat. I used a regular length e30 TOB and clutch slave, no problems to report yet. Clutch feel is very light, engine seems to be happy to spin up.

Tomorrow I'll be timing it and cleaning it up, Saturday I'll be smogging it and installing a stereo, Sunday I'll be driving it to Thunderhill.

I've been fighting a power issue. Haven't smogged it yet because it's not running quite right.
