With the #13 2002 running again we deemed it’s time to shift focus over to the 700. This car has been a side project for a good 8 years so it’s time get the beast together and on the road. Maybe some of you saw the car when we brought it out to last week’s SoCalVintage show. This won't be a quick build.
History:
The car was never going to be a proper-concours-restoration candidate given the amount of metal the tin worm had eaten. So the decision was made to make it a fun vintage race car.
Plans: RACE IT!
Given the modifications the car will be classified as a vintage sports racer. It will have an interior and be road legal just for kicks. The idea was to go all out but still keep it a somewhat period feeling car. Right now we’re putting everything in place (note the tack welds).
For the exterior we’re going to try and replicate the Hans Stuck/ bmw museum car (within reason). Similar to the couple shots below.

Here’s where it sits now

Steering shaft capped with a little Nardi love.

Specs (summarized)
Engine
We wanted to swap out the engine but keep it carbed (to remain somewhat period), so an air-cooled VW-lump made plenty of sense. It puts out 200bhp-ish, is 2.1L with full race internals, and drysump-ed. (The original .7L 700S flat-4 only put out about 40bhp)

Weight:
approx. 1500pounds
(This means the power to weight ratio will be around .13, right around Caterham/Lotus 7 territory, should be fun….)
Suspension:
Since we were changing all the suspension points we’ve been playing around with some MacPherson suspension software.
-Adjustable front/rear coilovers (using 2002 front struts and rear stub-axles)
-posi-lock camber toe.
-No bushings left, all spherical heim-joints and tubing.
Front

Rear

Brakes
Front and rear disk brakes running wildwood calipers and pedals. (the front disks are our light-weight 2-piece 323i rotors)

…..
Jeremy thought of molding on some of our 2002 Alpina flares might give us some needed room.
