Found an awesome source for clutches and wear plates, just called to verify prices and they are as shown... Which is really cheap compared to some BMW vendors, and you can choose between 1.9mm, 2.0mm and 2.1mm clutches. AutoAtlanta is also about 1/4 mile from my office!

I think for now I'm going to buy three new clutches and go with that, don't have the time to do the machining.

Yeah I've heard that, might try the dealer instead if AA tries to make me pay upfront or something

I purchased a few Porsche dog ear plates from ecs tuning a while back for about 37 a piece, iirc.

This thread keeps getting better and better. Congrats on getting your beast on the road!

Also about your loose carrier cover bolts, definitely get some upgraded ones. I bought a set from bimmerdiffs, waited two weeks for them and found out the same 12.9 grade allen bolts are available at lowes.

Just read this whole thread. Very cool stuff.

If you're interested in making the stock tach read correctly with an 8k face let me know. I've got mine going for about $50.

Got the LSD housing cap machined at work today, took off 4MM, which is the thickness of a clutch and wear plate.

                    20141201_154049 by braswell.jonathan, on Flickr

After that I picked up the clutches from a Porsche shop around the corner. Unfortunately, they are 2.47mm instead of 1.97mm like e30 clutches. Going to take the difference off of the cover and throw it all together tomorrow.

Machined the cover some more, built the LSD and swapped 3.23 gears into my housing. First time I've ever done diff setup and it was not fun, but we got it done. 4 clutches, maybe a tiny bit of extra stack height, should be interesting! The diff is back in the car, just need to button up a few things and re-connect my rear sway bar for autocross this weekend

What did your total preload change end up being? The diff can be unruley if you up it too much...

Doesn't machining just one cover to make up for the extra stack height result in the assembly being off center inside the case?

You mean in relation to the stack height in the LSD? If my maths are right we only added ~ .1 mm of stack height. To be honest, I don't really know what I'm doing so I'm just going to drive it and see what happens. I did talk to David and used lots of reference material for set up stuff, so I do feel confident about that. My pinion and carrier pre-loads and backlash are all within spec

There is only one carrier cover, stuff isn't really centered in the housing anyways.

The spacer is taken out of the bottom of the stack as well. Lower right in this pic.
