Hartge h26 project.....the long road:) Oct 2014 begins:)

You need to start by finding an electrical diagram for your specific car. It shouldn't be any different from a euro car of the same year. -
still working
I can not find any brown red wires? My car is a 323i euro, so maybe the wire colors are different. I did find the grounds and they 'look' fine, but I will start testing. I tried to disconnect every plug that is attached to the #23, but I must not have undone them all, still blowing fuses:(.
Will keep checking....Leave a comment:

it absolutely is grounding out - no question about that. you need to find out where a grey/red wire has damaged insulation and is either touching the chassis directly or one of the ground wires. just make sure you have no power applied when you're testing.

thanks for the help
ok, I will start with the grounds, but it sure seems strange that I went from everything working to major sparks. I am pretty sure something is touching: grounding out, because I have sparks at the neg. battery cable too, when I replace the fuse and put the cable on, it sparks, blue:). note that I put a 20 amp fuse in and it still blew up:) So something is not right.
thanks, will keep working, just took the radio out, no change, but I just took the harness off.....will work on grounds next.

Yup - It's not a big deal. Just takes patience. There's a major ground post under the dash on the drivers side that sometimes gets corroded or loose. If you've got sparks it's probably one of the grey/red wires that has their insulation pinched. you'll need to track them down one at a time. I'd start near the console first. Pull the battery, replace the fuse and use an ohm meter. Touch any of the grey/red wires and the chassis. It will probably show zero ohms. start disconnecting pulling bulbs on those wires until the short disappears. That's the wire that has cut insulation on it.
You may need to pull the dash depending on where the cut is..

You'll get it figured out. Might take tearing the car apart though. Not fun. I'll see what I can find.Leave a comment:

project on hold #23 fuse problem
I was putting the gauge cluster in and noticed I did not have power to the interior lights. A quick check showed the #23 fuse was blown...not a major problem:)...well replacing the fuse resulted in major sparks at #23, so there is a major ground problem or a hot wire touching somewhere......have taken have the car apart looking for touching wires.....
Of course all the power I need to finish up the gauges is not available:)
I put a help me please post under the tech section...
Hope to get this fixed, since I can not put the car back together...you should see it with the seat out and wires everywhere:)
Out to the garage for more fun!

Thanks for the post, and I sent you a pm. I will keep my eye out for a rear hartge badge for you...I might want to sell you my head light wipers... debating it. I don't even know if they've worked. They've worked once but after that... not too sure. It's coming a long great by the way. I love watching for updates here.
Cheers my friend! Let me know if you ever find a hartge badge for the rear. That's all i really want now hartge wise hah.
Forgot to mention the rear sunshade will be fixed this week too....has not worked for years because the clips broke...:), new clips coming in the mail!!!!

little update
The past few weeks have been tune up time. Had the h26 in the shop to check timing and mixture etc. Found a few more vac leaks and reset the timing....but now the idle is too high. Will be taking it back in to set it to 10 btdc and idle at 850rpm, which is where it is suppose to be. Right now it is at 13 btdc....not going to work very well....:)
I replaced lots of vac lines, found an Audi hose on the car:), and sealed up everything I could find:):

Replaced some more fuel hose:). Anyone have a red diag. port cap:)
Got this little tank:), maybe someday I will get the rest of the headlight wiper system...

more of the engine bay, cleaning some more....found out that the headers can be coated for about 200.00...maybe next year:)
Finally got the door trim piece on...the other one was black...now it is bent

Another fun shot of the cluster:)

Gathering all the parts to get these working....almost there, just have to get the oil temp sender.....

New parts in the trunk....got the carpet in, and the trunk trim on.....

oh and found a really nice kick panel for under the steering wheel at the junk yard. yeh 3.00:).
Decals are being reproduced and will go on in Sept....car is getting done!
Drives nice, but like I said it will drive better when the idle is at 850.....
More later.......Leave a comment:

will do with pictures
I need the hartge rear shocks and the monowiper:). Shocks are crazy expensive!!!
I am picking the car up tomorrow, so hope to get some pictures at the shop.
Also, have a guy looking for the full black sport seat covers over in Germany...then I can finish the interior... decals should be done in a week, so they will go on next:)
The gauge senders are on their way, got one yesterday so when I have time, I will hook up the gauges.
Still have tons of little things to fix, but now everything works on the car...finally!

took car in for a tune
Well, decided while I was waiting for the decals I would take the h26 for a tune. We are putting an 02 on the exhaust and then a wide band sensor on to car to see how it is doing while driving. Found some more vac. leaks, but they will be easy to fix. Found a few other little projects to work on. Hope to get some pictures up from the shop tomorrow....fun times.

That is a beautiful part!!The single arm wipers all seem to be the same. The linkages may be in-house creations as I just saw an ACSchnitzer stamped linkage assembly. I was too cheap and lost the auction.
I intend to do the modification as well. Need to get a spare from the yard.

This arm is brand new. The metal is all stil shiny, yellow zinc colored and the miniwiper is untouched. I lucked out with ACNico. He is another helpful source.
Yeh, most likely will do the mod this winter...not that the car will be out in the rain:)
thanks for sharing the above information.
