    M10 project

I just posted a thread under the m10 category, don't know how many people check it out so that's why I'm posting this here too. I picked up this 1.8l m10 head from my mechanic for free he had sitting. I finally got to it today and started to dismantle it and only got to removing the bolts for the rocker arms and that was about it. I don't know much on how to remove any of this that is the main reason for this posting. If anyone can help me out with some steps on dismantling this, that would be much appreciated. I currently have an 88 e30 and wanted to pick something up for a project, this head was perfect for that specially since I got the whole thing for free. I want to rebuild this engine, obviously need a complete bottom end and everything else but everyone starts somewhere, Any help or anyone who has parts for sale, let me know! I am obviously new to the m10 scene but I love my r3v community and know there are some good people out there who are a big help. Thank you!

Expect suggestions that you should turbo it/swap an M42/M50/LS X or what ever. It's beyond most people that an M10 weighs next to nothing, and responds well to performance mods (in relation to it's physical size). Also those have the complexity and durability of a crowbar.

    ..Loosen the eccentrics.
On the rocker shafts there are locking rings that hold the rockers in place. Take them out. Mark carefully the position of the rockers if you're not replacing them and/or the cam.

You'll need a valve spring compressor to release the valves. Make sure you know which valve is which, mark them.

What is your target with this head?
Having gotten it for free doesn't help much, you'll be spending $$$$$ if it'll be properly rebuilt. And more if you're going to make more power with it.

      Cheers, Jarno

Honestly nothing crazy, Ive never rebuilt a engine so this will be the first one I will be attempting. As of right now, I really wouldn't even mind if it was stock or If I decided to bore it out a bit but nothing crazy like a turbo build or anything. Just trying to have a project to keep my busy and learning and I thought this would be good a good starting point to learn and then hopefully dial it in a car eventually down the road. Pretty basic, and not much knowledge yet, mainly why I'm here trying to learn and just doing re search. Any input is appreciated!

I did not see this till now, thank you a lot for the input. I am about to start working on it, I wouldn't want to replace a few things if they're still in pretty solid condition but I am definitely one of those people who does everything new while already in there. I see a lot of people wanting to turbo these or put a lot of work and I respect that a lot, theses motors can be bad ass, just have to build it right
          Thank you again!!

I think I missed why you are disassembling that head? It looks fresh from the machinist. Are you wanting to port it?

I am disassembling it because I got it for free and want to learn. Also it did look fresh but have noticed certain things needing to be replaced as I'm taking it apart. For example, pretty sure I need new valves and some of the bolts for the rockers were missing, I want to take it apart and make sure everything internal is all good for a full rebuild, I think it will need to be machined although it does look like it got a machine job done there's are still some scuffs and nicks but I don't know enough to just automatically assume it needs to be machined

Took the rest of the bolts out, and the little center pieces that go in between the rockers where the bolt goes in. I noticed I can push some of the rockers off to the side where the spring is. Not exactly sure what the next step is to remove the rocker arms or the valves or anything, any help would be appreciated.

Take pictures of everything and mark it all so you know where it all goes when you put it back together. Remove the two 10mm bolts holding on the cam retainer plate, get that out of the way. Make sure all the little c clips are removed from the rocker shafts. Then push the shafts out, i had to tap mine a little. Then slide the cam out. Get a valve spring compressor, remove the springs and pull the valves out and inspect. Just finished rebuilding my 1.8i head recently. It is pretty straight foreward

Unbolt the cam holder. The plate that also holds the rocker shafts in place.
If you've taken out all the rings that lock rockers in place you should be able to pull/wiggle all the shafts out.

Unless they are bent or the tips are mushroomed bad, the valves look pretty good to me. There are a few pretty good dings here and there on the machined surface of the head, but I don't think those would stop it.

Your machinist will likely grind the valves and deck the head for around $100.

                        Go!

I'm going to give it a try this morning. I know this shouldn't be to difficult, but I'm new to this so bare with me! All the help is appreciated!!
