Story of my life + 88 325is build

Well, I finally started a build thread. The guilt of buying new parts and not sharing is getting to me. :p
Sadly I don't have pictures of when I first bought the car as I lost them all before I could get them onto my computer. This thread officially starts the public documentation of my build.

Anyways, time for a little backstory, starting with how I ended up with my E30. I'll try and keep this relatively short since it's a pretty long story. (pictures will come soon I promise!)

    Rewind to 2012.

Junior year of high school had ended and I had bought my first car. Ready for this? a 1989 Ford Ranger 2wd. Mostly blue.
    Okay maybe more like 60%.
Picked it up for $300 and apart from missing the majority of it's sad blue paint, it ran like a champ.

That summer I got my first official job working at a tire shop which gave me lots of money to spend on whatever high school students spend money on. A few months in, one of my co-workers brought his '72 2002 to work and I immediately fell in love with it.

It was incredibly clean; brand new Inka Orange paint, slim early chrome bumpers, rebuilt drivetrain, and a few tasteful mods here and there like 6k HIDs and lowering springs. He ended up buying a new Audi and didn't want 3 vehicles so cut me an insane deal that I couldn't say no to. I sold the mighty Ranger and I drove it home a few days later.

Over senior year it had become my project. She got a whole new interior including a brand new grey carpet and grey Intergra Type-R Recaros. The headliner was done professionally prior to my ownership in a cream-colored vinyl which looked great with the grey interior. I was also able to find a set of 13x7 et0 Minilites that I picked up for her as well. I graduated high school in 2013 and moved into my own place. Here's what she looked like that summer:

Sadly, April of 2014 brought about a lot of major changes in my life and I couldn't hold on to her any longer. I sold her to a great guy who already owned a '71 he restored and gave to his cousin, so fortunately she went to a good home.

Shortly after I sold the 02 I bought a WRX. Not too much to say about that one... it was fast, reliable, and the AWD was great. It didn't live up to the hype and insurance was just unreasonable.

This is where it all comes together. I had always wanted an E30. Ever since my 02. So I held on to the Subaru until I found the right one: a coupe, with a sunroof, clean paint, and preferably plastic bumpers. I ended up finding a black 325is with all of that!
Minus the plastic bumpers. But hey, at least it's an '88.

So here we are, September of 2015. I bought this car at the beginning of this year, I have no excuse for the absence of a build thread.

Now that all of that's out of the way, here's some details about the car so far (and finally some pictures!)

Nice! looks like a great looking e30 and beautiful 2002. Orange by far my favorite 2002 color shame you had to sell it.

        Thanks!

Yeah it was sad to see her go. Probably won't ever find another one as clean as that. Oh well, I'll own another someday.

I'll hopefully have her show-ready by next summer. This winter I'm completely redoing the interior. I hate the tan vinyl and leather, I want black cloth. I have some goodies I picked up this last weekend from a fellow r3v member that I'll post up some pics of tonight.

Come springtime, she'll be sitting on coils and if all goes according to plan, new wheels too.

As far as the motor goes, i really wanted an S52 but these M20's are decent motors when you throw some money at them. Can't decide whether I want to keep it and eventually turbo it, or swap a built NA S52 in. Only time will tell. :p

Looks great man. Is it just reflection or are the inserts in your side moldings painted red?

They are red, though it's vinyl pinstripe tape I saw at the auto parts store one day. I've always loved the look of the M3 Evo, but I didn't want it on the front and rear bumper so picked it up and tried it on the side molding. Ended up really liking it and it's been there ever since. At least 6 months and it hasn't started peeling yet!

Here's a link if you're looking for something like it.

Meant to post this earlier. Picked up some pristine black houndstooth door panels last weekend from another r3v member! 6 and a half hours of night driving and 2 hours sleep between two works days to get these but I couldn't pass it up!

I'm excited to get these in, although I want the rest of my interior ready to go in at the same time, still need to find a black rear seat and start saving up for some Recaro SR3's so the door cards will make some good furniture in the meantime... hopefully staring at these sitting in my room will motivate me lol

In other news, I repainted my bumper trim with some SEM trim paint since it looked awful. Also fabricated a makeshift plate filler to bolt on behind my actual license plate. Anyone with diving boards know how bad the gap is behind the plate and I'm tired of being pulled over for my euro plate

I have a couple projects for the next couple weeks, though I should really figure out this idle issue I'm having before doing much else haha

Just a quick update here, work's been keeping me busy and I've been lazy since I don't have exciting things to share. :|

                  Anywho...

In hopes of figuring out my surging idle, I've been replacing little things here and there like crazy trying to get it to smooth out. Over the last 2 months I've replaced:

                  Coolant temp sensor
                  O2 sensor
                  FPR
                  Spark Plugs
                  Valve Cover gasket
Also tested a different ICV from a car I know was working and still had the issue so ruled that one out.
Also been wondering if it's my TPS' idle switch not working, however the stomp test still works.

I felt as though I had a vacuum leak somewhere, but strangely when I pull the vacuum line from the FPR to the intake manifold, the idle raises but smooths out... strange.

I mentioned needing a smoke test to one of my buddies at work who said he'd stop by the auto shop of our old high school and see if they still have a legitimate smoke test machine. Turns out they did, so I stopped by there this morning to smoke test it and low and behold I've got 4 or 5 trouble spots.

A few out of different hoses, one by the brake booster, and also one by the ICV. is coming from the hairline crack in the corner of my valve cover... so I'll be needing a few of those. Also I noticed just a haze of smoke rising from around different parts of the valve cover/head. Couldn't pinpoint exactly where but I've got some sort of leak from the front end and near the back end where the crack is. Could the cracked valve cover be warped, thus lacking a seal in other areas? I replaced the gasket and torqued it all down to spec.
P.S. if anyone has one lying around, shoot me a price, I'd definitely be interested. Local is preffered but if shipping isn't too much I'd be down.

So I'm going to start by sealing up all those leaks and check vacuum leaks off the list... this idle's getting annoying :p

On a side note, does anyone in the 5-0-tree go by the Euro meet Tuesday's at Old Chicago on Cornell?
I went a few weeks ago with a friend who drives an mk4 but it was all VW's. Haven't been back since but she told me that the meet the other night had 10+ BMW's.

Fixed all the major vacuum leaks and she idles perfectly now. Still looking to buy a valve cover so if anyone has one sitting around let's make a deal!

Of course I found another problem. My clutch pedal has been sitting awfully close to the floor... I pulled it up yesterday and after I did that was fairly certain I sucked an air bubble into the line somewhere. Got under it today at work and sure enough I've got a good leak out of the slave. So looks like I'm tackling that tomorrow. I'll post pics up once I get home. Anyone have any experience with leaking slave cylinders?

Well it's been a while since I've updated. We're in the busy season at work so most of my time and attention has been there. Almost over though so this build should get a little more interesting (I'll explain later)

Being tied up with work (and recently turning 21 :drink:) I haven't done too much. Bought an OE shift boot to replace the shit ebay one I had before :p

The weather decided to be kind so I went out and snapped some pics the other night

                      On a final note:
Recently I've had an opportunity fall into my hands to own a mint e28 with 120k original miles white/cardinal red. I almost can't say no but if I buy this car, I'll be selling the e30. I'll post here with a final verdict within the next few days. I'd prefer to sell this to a r3v member, Craigslist is a last resort. If anyone on here is interested, I'll cut you a deal to make sure she goes to a good home.
**Turns out I'm keeping the car. Here we go!

Got around to adjusting valve clearance. Threw on a valve cover to replace my cracked one and she runs so much better now!

Also picked up some black seats so I can start on this interior soon :p
