Cosmosblau 1985 318i slowly but surely

4 year member and on my 6th E30... Hopefully this one is here to stay (some of you get that) lol

I picked up a 1985 318i Cosmosblau Metallic coupe 5mt with blue checkered interior for $1300 in WDC

Mechanically its pretty sound and 98% rust free
It needs all new bushings and suspension as most of it has surface rust and is sloppy as all hell..

So here are some pictures so far..

Paint will remain shitty for a while





I still need to order seat brackets for the Corbeau GTS II seats and clean them

I have already ordered:
Suede shift/ebrake boots
Nardi Steering wheel (not the classic)
Solid Condor rear bushing set
Cosmo coilover kit
22mm front sway bar
Dash mat
Bare rear subframe for disk conversion
Nardi (not the classic)


Things I need asap:
OEM radio
RTA's
Front strut tubes 51mm
Bilsteins or Koni's
Smoked DEPO smileys
Windshield front and rear black lock strips
Motor and trans mounts
Euro bumpers (eventually)

So I got the car in air ready to drop suspension and subframe. Still need to buy new brakes for the front and rear, and find a place to have the trailing arms, LCA's, and subframe blasted clean of all surface rust, also need bilsteins and new shock mounts..

Also ordered ANSA cat back from another member for $50, poly alternator bushings as mine are shot, euro HVAC panel, OE radio (had a blaupunkt before), suede shift boot and e-brake boot kit

Cosmo coilover kit 8k 6" front springs and 10k 5" rear springs
22mm front sway bar
new control arms with ball joints, tie rods, and sway bar links
Condor subframe, RTA's, diff, and offset CAB's
Outer front window seals

Should be an eventful few days doing the overhaul, waiting until I order the other parts I need stated above

Before I go any further, I just want to let yall know that rust is my biggest pet peeve, I hate everything about it and the way it lives :(

So today I finished going shadow line, pulled my door seals and plastics and found some rust under the pass. side door sill, I ground it down to bare and hit it with etching primer until I can decide what to do with this...

There was also a spot on the driver rocker so I ground that down as well then too a step back and it looked ridiculous with the big smooth spot, so I began to grind all the rock guard off each rocker, spray with etching primer then will go over with a gloss black rustoleum..

I also got around to installing my shift/ebrake boots from "Matt-B" and my euro HVAC panel I got from another r3ver :)

While doing the shadow line job I pulled the door trim to install new window seals from Turner as mine were dried out and cracked

Love it! Had the same car I bought from an old dude in th emiddle of nowhere.. mine barely ran and had loads of rust - ended up parting it out. cosmoblau rocks though, love seeing the color on my brothers e28!!! sub'd

Ran into a few problems with the new alternator today, causing an extreme short and battery drainage... Need to source another alternator pronto so I can start driving this darn thing again

OP there's a ton of alternators out there. Are you sure that's what's wrong? Might be the voltage regulator
