Tomorrow I am headed up to Fullerton to see about an Orientblau 1995 540i/A that appears to be in far superior shape than my car. I will probably pick it up and begin the manual/suspension swap process.
Here is the thread where I mulled over the idea: http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/showthread.php?t=385185
I don't want to give up on this 540i/6 car if it has some kind of value beyond just the 6 speed. The general consensus is that there isn't any collectors value because its not an M-Sport.
So if the swap goes down, here is what will have to happen:
- Front struts and shocks (M-Technic)
- Front sway bar (M-Technic)
- Rear springs and shocks (M-Technic)
- Rear sway bar (M-Technic)
- Differential: Automatic has 2.81 and the manual has 2.93 (if the automatic has LSD I will leave it in)
- Driveshaft swap
- Manual transmission cross-member (different part numbers)
- New throw out bearing
- Manual Transmission and shifter assembly
- Pedal assembly
- Master and slave clutch cylinder
- Master cylinder reservoir
- Swap RevShift Green motor mounts over
- Swap ECU
- Pull all of my shiny new parts off the old car's motor I installed (grrr)

Went up yesterday with a trailer to look at and probably buy the car mentioned in the post above...Of course, the car was in rougher shape than the pics showed. It wasn't running very smoothly and a stomp test revealed 1215. The clear coat needed to be redone everywhere on the car (same as my car) and there were some dings in places that would never pull out correctly. It would be a lateral move. So I walked away from it.
But not all is lost. I have a guy with a 98 740il with a 130K engine we are going to pull for $300. I am tracking down an engine hoist and getting ready to pull my motor from my car.Si vis pacem, para bellum.

Alright! Went up and pulled that 740i m62 non vanos motor over the weekend. The guy was cool as hell. Does tons of Cummins 6bt swaps. He is a mobile mechanic and has a huge yard he lives on and supervises.
He got this e38 on trade for other work he did. It ran when parked but had a bad transmission. The only thing missing was one coil pack and the valley pan...which was odd. It took us a couple hours in the Ramona heat to get it out. Eventually loaded into the back of the 4Runner and then started taking pics.
Can't believe how gooey the back of the motor was. I bet that the cooling lines to the transmission went bad and helped destroy it and made a freaking mess.
I will clean it up and get this torn down to the short block this week.
FYI, I suck at operating a hoist load leveler. Off to YouTube to figure that shit out.
EDIT: Turns out the leveler I bought isn't working right. I am still researching how it is supposed to operate.Last edited by marshallnoise; 05-16-2016, 01:44 PM.Si vis pacem, para bellum.

Got out there and did a little bit of teardown. Turns out the valley pan is still there, but it is just missing the plastic cover. So now you know what the valley pan looks like without the valley pan cover still attached to it. It just forces coolant to the sides of the block. I believe the LSx motors have a similar thing going on.
Knock sensors were in great shape. Harness was chucked. I had one injector that was red and the other 7 were black (no freaking clue). I need to get my shopvac out there to clean up some of the leaves and crap. Then I need to pull the remaining accessories off and prepare for a good power wash.

The name valley pan makes a lot of sense now right? ;) I thought of leaving the plastic cover off of mine but figured that BMW had it there for a reason.
You are going to run OBDI right? Unfortunately those knock sensors won't do you any good since they are two sensors to one connector. That was an expensive order when I realized I needed four new knock sensors.

Yes, I am running OBDI. I know those knock sensors won't fit the original loom. But, I already bought new ones for the original engine and installed them when the crumbled to 1,000,000 pieces when replacing the previously mentioned valley pan gasket. But I might be able to get a few bucks by throwing them on CL. And yeah, it was another $200 I wasn't ready to spend!Si vis pacem, para bellum.

I finished up tearing down the $40 and a 12 Pack block. Long story short: two thrashed main bearings.
Since we like media:
Purchased this m62 from an e39 with heads, but stripped down pretty far. I couldn't get it to crank over with all of the pistons connected up. Lots of scor...
Continuation from the first video. Got two of the main bearing caps off. It finally was lose. The second main bearing was trashed. But wait, there is more...
More carnage! Another trashed main bearing. In all there were three that were bad. If you want to see pics of the rest of this engine go here: http://www....
This whole thing was sent off to the scrap yard to make some room on my work bench. Fun experience, ended.Last edited by marshallnoise; 10-21-2019, 03:34 PM.Si vis pacem, para bellum.

1998 m62b44 Teardown
Alright, here is the motor I pulled from a 1998 740i up in Ramona that IS good.
It needed cleaning, badly.
Yours truly, the idiot.
With the help of my sucker of a friend Mike, we were able to get this thing torn down to the short block I need.

Turns out that the u shaped tensioner was very close to failing. Chunks of it was found in the bottom of the oil pan and it was noticeably brittle. Fortunately, it won't be using that part any more!

I will get some pictures later of the cylinders to show how good of shape they are in.
This engine turns freely and very smoothly.
I decided to tackle the back of the engine stuff before getting it mounted on my new engine stand (long story).
Here is a source of some coolant leaks that is not really discussed because most people have little desire to pull a transmission to get access to the gasket that causes the problem.

To be completely honest, it makes absolutely zero sense that there is a removable plate there anyway. The only reason I can see why you would have one is because you need access to pull chunks of plastic water pump impeller out of the area.

What is revealed is the back two cylinders and the underside of the valley pan. I plan on pulling off the valley pan when I get home tonight and putting on a new one. I will take pics of that too.

Pretty tired and not really coherent when speaking in this vid. Sorry!I am putting together an m60b44 which is a hybrid of the original m60 V8 and the bigger...
Installed a new valley pan gasket. Plus wanted to show the back plate with the pan off.
The video is me farting around with some basic editing. No other reason to do it.
So you remove the valley pan with the back plate off and this is what you see.
EDIT: Pic is gone, but there are some up above.
From the top.
Same same, but different.
And with the new pan installed.
See above.
I snapped a bolt off. I think someone else cross threaded it before me and when I went to put it back together, it just gave way. I tried backing it out with a reverse drill bit and had no luck. I am just going to roll with it and see what happens. Meh.Last edited by marshallnoise; 10-21-2019, 04:13 PM.Si vis pacem, para bellum.
