BBS RS032 (dream come true) =)

Clearly by my username I'm a BBS fanboy, and something about their classic three piece wheels has captured my imagination for at least the last two years. Since before I got my e30, ever since I saw the first pic of a car with RS's, I was in love.

But damn were they out of my budget!! Well no longer... I finally got my own set!! They need some work, but I love to learn new skills, and refurbing a set of rs wheels is 100% great in my mind (hopefully it stays this way). I got the wheels for about half of a mint set, and want to keep the build under $1450. Since this is the project forum I figure this goes here even though they aren't a car 👍

The wheels are 15x6.5 barrels with 1.5" lips, total offset +17. 4x114.3 redrilled to 4x100. 67.5mm center bore (need custom hub rings) if you can make me a set for less than $60 let me know!

And the work begins! Help from the gf is great, working with aircraft remover, great too lol not so good for the skin. Shit makes nitrile gloves kinda bubbly, replace them once you start feeling that weird tingly feeling at all! Got a painter light and heater from Walmart- percect! Sorry for shitty screen shots

Many coats/ brush strokes later, still have to get factory paint off.. But the shitty green is mosty gone.

    Wish me luck!!

You probably don't want to strip the original paint off, it's adhered very well to the metal. Paint on paint sticks easier than paint on metal.

Question about refurbishing BBS RS, I always end up getting rust on some of the new bolts after few days in rain even though my multi pointed scoket that fits nicely has not skipped when tightening. Is it the quality of the coating of the bolts i'm using or is there some special rubber lined socket I need to use?

when I refinished mine I used plastic wrap inside of the socket to help protect the bolt's finish.

It can be expensive, but building your own wheels is an awesome accomplishment! I'm lookonh forward to seeing what these will look like...

You can send the centers to Dave at renewed finishes. I believe he does them for around 200-250 for 4. I could be wrong. But it's well worth it in the end.

I searched the whole east coast for a set of 4x100 and basically got lucky lol. Paid a bit extra to go through ebay. But the price was definitely right.

Thanks! Save some $ and have at it. So far it's awesome, especially because it's winter here in MA. Not being able to wrench is sad and frustrating, this is an awesome project for the down time.

Bro that shit is on there so well! The grey looks great, sadly one of the faces is partly sanded on the face ='( so I need to sand them all or just prime that one or have that one professionally color matched? I do like the original color. What do you think?

I'm thinking a full polish would be awesome. Need some polishing skills because right now I have no idea how to properly polish anything hehe

                  I hope they look good!

Thanks for the reference but I'm doing DIY except for paint or powder coat maybe.

More stripper on these two did nothing.

Testing isopropyl- not very effective at rust/ rubber corrosion.

Dumped aircraft stripper in the bolt jar, when I get home tonight they will be there for about 24 hours! Then it's time for some steel wool action. I'm curious to see how the stripper works for such a long time. Hopefully no corrosion

Funny I have two sets sitting in the barn in Mass too. That being said there is a good Cadium coater in greater Hartford area that will redo your hardware.

Some people use tumblers to get the bolts good.

After doing numerous sets....... I buy new polished stainless ones from Pertsch and Partner, and sell mine to recoup some cost. Well worth it to me, as bolts are a bitch, plus you don't chip the chrome when tightening them as they are stainless.

That's a good idea. Right now I'm doing wire brush and the threads are much much better. Then I'm going to keep experimenting with different chemicals to see if I can really bring them back. So far Aircraft stripper and isopropyl did OK, but not even close to what's needed. So I'm going to order up some naval jelly, and hopefully that will remove all the little rust that won't come off.

That would be awesome! I've watched some videos and read some articles but the more the merrier. :)

So what did you use to strip the green?
Just curious since I have a set of gold factory weaves that were spray painted silver, and I want to see if I can strip only the cheap silver off.

Fresh!! Are you going to refurb them?

Made some progress on the bolts and nuts. As I said before I think a session in naval jelly would get the last remnants of rust off of them.

Mocked up a few bolts into the wheels to see how much thread I really needed. No pic but they look good! The stripper left this cool kinda oil spill look that's super subtle. I may fully polish... Plans for the faces are up in the air!

Wire brush absolutely kills it! I read over and over again that steel wool and a drill is the way to go, worked like crap for me at least. Mine are probably worst than most with the weird rubber shit but damn the wire brush is so much faster and the results are superb. before bolts after bolts. Did about 20-30.

School just started up again but I hope that I can get some tires on these sooner than later and just wait for spring!
