    1991 318i Project

Day 1: I just bought this 1991 BMW 318i for $800 8 days ago. Perfect interior but the engine needed a little (supposedly) work. I figured I had nothing to lose.

Day 2: The next day, with some help from a couple friends, I pulled the engine, the previous owner said I had to replace the water pump and thermostat. He also said I had to replace the oil rotor (this is bs).

Day 3: Started engine disassembly. I quickly realize (and you may be able to see in the last picture) a lot more was wrong/ missing than the water pump and thermostat. There were no gaskets anywhere, and over the last week I have been ordering gaskets as well as other parts such as brakes and a battery.

I will keep this thread updated as this project progresses. I would like to restore it was well as doing a couple modifications to the exterior by the time I am out of high school (I'm going into my junior year).

I've got no idea. When I tore it down none of the tensioners were in. Hopefully my gaskets will all be here by the end of the next week and I will be able to put the engine back together. I have no idea if the engine even turns over or what kind of compression I have.

what gaskets are missing? by the looks of it the cams are not even secured properly. Maybe the PO started to take apart the top end and then stopped?

Every gasket is missing except for the intake manifold gasket and head gasket. You are also correct in that the cams were not tightened back down, which is to my benefit.

Sweet project! I also have a '91 318i and the m42 is great. My mom actually got my car when I was in 1st grade for $300. I was given the car when I started driving and now I just graduated high school haha

My engine is leaking oil like crazy. Gotta do rear main and even though I replaced upper oil pan gasket it is leaking from there as well :(.

Just finish breaking down the engine. I forgot to tighten crankshaft bearing caps... 4/5 spun. No wear or anything. I'm one lucky mf.

Piston and Upper oil pan install. Waiting on a chain case gasket (cause usps destroyed mine in shipping).
