    OBD1 M52 318i

I don't think I have ever actually started a thread before, I usually just troll around and buy/sell things. So here it goes, my build thread of the swap that has been done a million times by now. But hey, I searched through many peoples 24V builds to get info on my swap and they each had different info to offer that helped a lot. FYI, the car is almost done, so this is kind of looking back over that past year and where it sits now.

My plan was a 24V swap, suspension, clean it up, and try to get out on the track/autocross as I have never done it before.

The car: 1991 Brilliantrot 318i slick top - wanted to get coupe but compromised due to my impatience. Bought it in 2/2016 and here it was

I quickly bought some different wheels and tires, BC racing coilovers with custom spring rates, new control arms/poly CABs, tie rods, end links, and other suspension components to freshen it up

Here is the car with the above installed, also got new headlights and euro grills. i got rid of the black kidneys in this picture, I didn't like the look

Here are the coilovers with the welding that is required to install. The coilover slides over the old cut strut housing and it is welded in place. It was also drilled through and 2 bars are welded in for strength, i don't really want that weld to fail....

One of the last rides before going under the knife, the m42 was fun while it lasted, just not enough

Picked up the M52, and purchased the rest of the obd1 sensors that it needed to be fully obd1.

The infamous oil pump nut, I safety wired it while the oil pan was off just to be safe, not sure if the problem is overstated or not.

MTech2 steering wheel rewrapped with tricolor stiching

Installed the gripforce lightweight flywheel, stage 1 clutch and pressure plate TOB etc..

Good trick my brother taught me to keep the flywheel from moving while torqueing the flywheel bolts

Hood off and in my apartment so it didn't get scratched, my fiancé wasn't a fan of that idea...

m3 gearbox mounted on my fancy engine stand made of 2x4s

Engine out, not the easiest in a single stall apartment garage...

    [/url]E30 by

Pretty straight forward to pull, the exhaust was the worst part, as the bolts needed to be sawed/drilled etc to get off. picture shows the firewall being drilled to move the brake booster over to sit the intake manifold for the 24v. Also made one of the modified clevises needed to move it over

Engine in for the first time, pretty tricky, if putting in with transmission on - don't even try without a load leveler, I cant imagine doing it without one. I didn't have to cut any of the firewall soundproofing, dropped in with exhaust manifold on (I used ebay long tube headers) and I have the stock Control arm bushing lollipops - plenty of clearance for me at least. I have the treehouse racing lollipops if anyone wants to buy them

I sent my harness off to RobertK to be modified for the swap. He did an excellent job - highly recommend. Also purchased a TRM chip for the obd1 manifold, 21.5lb injectors, Lightweight flywheel, etc..

Leftover stuff for sale if anyone sees anything they want!

Not sure how to post video but first start up went well, very loud with open headers....

Here is the exhaust set up i went with, ebay headers, y pipe to magnaflow resonator and magnaflow 14 inch muffler - im happy with the sound. Although the headers may rattle at certain rpms.. not sure yet.

My brothers Golf R build... had a tune with stock internals, antilag etc... pistons destroyed..

    Pretty recent picture

Messed around with what i thought was a vacuum leak but ended up being a bad MAF

    Still left:
New diff - still has the 4.10 used by the stock 4 cylinder, gearing is very short. debating if a 3.73 will still be too short - any input from people with a ZF gearbox and 24V?

fix valve cover oil leak, i replaced the valve cover gasket and its still leaking out of the front - trying new rubber grommets used when bolting the cover down

Alignment is horrible after doing new tie rods, apparently i'm not good at estimating the length of them.

other than that just annoying stuff like bleeding brakes.

in the future id like to get a roll bar and bucket seats for the track. I'm happy with the power for now, we will see if a turbo is in its future

Awesome stuff. I'll be sub'ing this because I'm also doing a 24v swap on my 318i (although just an m50).

Looking forward to your thoughts/experience with the ebay headers. I'm still trying to figure out what my options are, and if yours end up working out well I may just go that route. Which headers in particular did you get?

My other question is now that you have the engine in, do you think in hindsight if you shimmed the engine, and grinded down the fins on the intake manifold, do you think you could have squeezed the engine in there without having to move the brake booster?

Thanks! when I got them they were called speed daddy and were $100. The guy who welded my exhaust has done the exhaust on a few other 24v e30s with ebay headers and he said mine were pretty good compared to some he had seen. Sounds like they aren't all exactly alike. You cant beat the price but the 2 tips of mine were touching together when I first put them in so he had to cut them a little further back to be able to weld. So far I don't mind them at all - again I cant tell if what I am hearing is the headers vibrating or something else like LTW flywheel chatter

I ended up having to grind the fins off the intake manifold even with the booster moved over 1/2 inch. I think moving the booster is over is pretty easy in hind sight, I don't have any knowledge if shimming would work or not. I just drilled the 4 holes for the booster and the big hole in the middle, then bought a new clevis off of ECS and had a shop weld it to the one I cut in half. If you go this way, make sure you cut it super straight and have the holes that the pin goes in aligned well - its a tight fit - I had to open up the holes a bit as it was welded a tiny bit misaligned. I don't think it would fit without moving the booster or getting a smaller one, at least with my obd1 manifold and AKG motor mounts

Do you have any more pictures of the exhaust setup? looking for ideas for my upcoming swap, and this one looks nice and simple

Pretty much have the same exact car except I have opted to keep my m42 and tinker with it since i got other bigger engine cars to play with too. Brilliantrot 4 door slick top.

Looks good, you will love the setup. Only thing to consider in the future would be S52 cams. Its a riot, I love the M52 motor.

As far as the rear diff ratio, I would go with a 3.25, you'll love it. The 3.73 will still be too short. If you can find a 3.46 that would be as aggressive as I would go with that transmission

Thanks!, I definitely want to stick with a ratio on the shorter side because its only a weekend/track car, just not a small case 4.10. I would love a 3.46 but they are pretty hard to come by. right now 55-60mph is 3000rpm, but the torque is pretty addicting - I think ill miss it...

Yeah 3.25 is the most attainable ratio that works well. 3.46 would be perfect around town I think, a little revvy on the highway but not too bad and I think we would just be touching the limiter at most tracks down here.

Yep, a 3.25 LSD or a 3.15 Torsen is just right for the ZF box.

Also found this, showing how the headers fit, you can see the tail pipes are touching and point toward eachother - wasn't too big of a deal for the exhaust shop to cut them back

Running a 2.79 with the ZF here, car still tops out at 130mph in 5th.
                          3000rpm at 70mph.

2.97 or 3.15 would be perfect

Finally got my valve cover to stop leaking - replaced all the rubber grommets and added a few other spots of RTV. Also got crank case vacuum back by installing a closed catch can loop - so ill have to manually drain it for now until I come up with a better solution.

Now just an alignment and its all ready to rock. Looking for some good bucket seats/roll bar for the future

Small setback... I had a small deceleration issue where the car felt like the E brake was on or something. It wasn't too bad and was intermittent. This weekend it happened pretty bad where the car struggled to accelerate, I drove for a minute or 2 then pulled over and my brakes were smoking and very hot. It believe it was all 4 brakes and I'm thinking my master cylinder is compressing but not returning fluid back to the reservoir so I ordered one up hoping that's the case. I moved the booster over for the swap but the pedal is fully up and I cant move it back any more.

                              Anyone ever had this issue?
