the "s" on the top of the diff means "sphere" which is auf deuche for limited slip.
I tend to agree more with A = Auto and S = Standard opinion. I’ve seen the S and A on several front ix diffs (which we all know to be open diffs), as well as viscous rear ix diffs and the diffs marked with S were 3.91 or 3.64, whereas the diffs marked A were 3.73 or 4.10 ratios.

Yes, I’m driving it a bit. Mostly on weekends. It gets washed every week and waxed every two to three weeks. Spends most of its time either in garage or if out it is under a very good cover. I vowed that I would drive it if I bought it. I already have one Garage Queen, the Porsche 997.2.

While I received many responses on the “S” I still have not heard anything on what the white “A” stands for.

Woke up today to balmy 19 degree weather and decided to drive the Verty30, just because. It was spectacular. Rowing through the gears on the east end of Long Island, bright sunshine, heat blasting and a stupid smile on my ugly mug. All is good.

I thought "A" Was associated with automatics, but I dont know why BMW would have special transmissions for Automatics.

              Is yours stamped "A" ?

2mAn: The open diff I removed from the Verty30 was stamped with a white “A” on the top where the replacement diff sports a white “S.”

So, I’m in the market for new clutch kit, which includes the flywheel. WHat do you guys recommend for a good clutch kit. WHen it gets a bit warmer here on Strong Island I’m going to attempt the clutch DIY in my garage. Help is welcome. I always have really really really good beer at the ready...

Really, I’m 10 minutes from the airport and 20 minutes from Calverton. Wish I would have known you were up and out this way. I would have invited you over for a beer.
