Yeah I've got a 330i rack and plenty of time, wondering if it'd be worth it to rebuild.

Try it out. The main issues that you can run into if the rack internals have been exposed to a harsh environment from running sans boots (pitting/etc) or if mechanically it doesn't turn smoothly anymore (like accident damage). Otherwise it's just a bunch a seals and a fairly straight forward job resealing it. Do mark the tension bolt to get it close on re-assembly though.

So Kronus gave me a free e36 Steering rack... Problem is, it leaked :(

I bought the rebuild kit and followed fredk's rebuild DIY on BFC and went from there. All apart:


Bit of a mess mid-rebuild. I found that my 22MM Northern Tool Socket was a perfect fit to drive out the hard-to-reach center seal.


Back together:


Installation (including a quick tape-measure alignement)


Went to a shop and got the tires installed and the car aligned:




Also spray painted these old Beverly Hills BMW license plate frames that were all faded in lachsilver.. because why not :)





The car now drives/handles/looks great, has all the modern amenities such as AC/heated seats/music...that may be it for a little while other than some little finishing touches.
