Then you can change the battery or alt before it leaves you stranded. OR, when you do go to start the car, and it won't turn over - you already know what part to replace.
If you don't have the gauge, and the car won't turn over, you don't know what to replace. It could be either.

Got a bit more done. Still a ways to go.
After much searching and special ordering I finally found some LED displays that will fit - not only into the button - in to all sorts of places. (gauge cluster, vents, ect..) The circuity that is needed to drive them is of course more complex. So they will be priced accordingly. Don't expect them to be cheap.

Yea, they are kinda cool.
Soldering them is slow suicide. There are 10 pins on something smaller than a tick-tack.
I need to find a better way to do this.

What a finished display will look like. The text height is exactly the same as your OBC display. very readable at a glance.
