This is a bit of a boring update but it's progress. Took on the silicon gluing project, it was my first time working with silicon. I always heard to "bead it on" Well, I thought this meant make little beads like little balls and then spread it evenly. So I did that...
Used the clips to hold it in place overnight with tape on each end of the clip so it wouldn't scratch the glass or freshly painted trim
On the top it came out nicely, but I started to see it wasn't really glued properly. There was a gap between the trim and the side of the glass that isn't supposed to be there.
So I took it all off and took on the project with the help of my Dad since laying silicon all the way around was hard to work quickly so as not to let it dry. Here's a hint to working with silicon, if you spray it with rubbing alcohol, it somewhat "runs back the timer" of how fast the silicon dries, not all the way, but it delays it a bit. So with spraying it with the rubbing alcohol and having my Dad's help on Father's Day we took off my crappy silicon job and did it the right way. I didn't realize bead meant a thick line.
Then we wrapped twine around parts to be sure the trim adheres to the side of the glass
Looking underneath it, you can see it's much tighter around the glass and has silicon seeping out. This may seem messy and unorganized, but it's better for it to be seeping and clean the excess off later, than to have it not adhere properly.
That is sitting overnight to cure and a couple of days ago I took to stripping the top trim. It was twice as hard as stripping the bottom trim since it was bigger and had more difficult grooves to get into.
Then I painted it, looks nice
Tomorrow when the silicon from the bottom trim has cured I will silicon glue the top trim on and once that's done all I have to do is wait for my newly fabricated rails to come and I can epoxy them on!
I did some experimenting with the sunroof today and understood how it works. All you do is unclip the headliner grommets and slide it back into the roof excess
In this next pic you can see the rail just above the headliner panel. See how it stops half way through the sunroof edge? The moonroof rails don't stop, they go all the way back so the slider is secured down.
Right now the slider will flop all over the place when far back
But when further forward and under the rail, it stays secured down
Then the sunroof is only held into place with 3 torx screws on each side
Then it comes right out
I carefully set the moonroof into place for a preview. It's going to look awesome
You can see in this pic all that's missing is the brackets to attach and it will drop right into the car. Although it still needs the provisions for the slider panel. One thing at a time though
Looking at the top of the headliner panel, it's old, the glue has stopped sticking and it's a bit worn with a small hole in it
You can also see the rail's lip and where it stops but needs to go on for the moonroof. I should be able to find someone to fabricate a new one.
At this point I had some good news and some bad news. The good news is I will be able to re-use me sunroof gaskets on the moonroof. I don't know why I didn't think of that before. It will save me a lot of money. The bad news is, being the idiot I am, I tore my headliner panel.
BUT I need to take it out to integrate a handle for the slider, and it had a hole and was worn and slightly stained anyways. The entire headliner unit for the sunroof is cheaper than the gaskets were. So I'll be getting a new headliner unit for the moonroof, but I need to source some sort of handle for the slider...

OCD-dissorder withdrawls? Only cure for that is a Detail brush, mequires spray bottle and 15 strait hours in your car with a screwdriver a lint collector.
And if you find a golf pencil and couple of dust bunnies you can McGyver your way into a leathal weapon build thread...
