One billion apps sold? How about paying the developers?

Apple is going absolutely ape shit over selling their billionth iPhone app, and has the disposable income to give away a $10k iTunes gift card, a $3K Macbook Pro, and a $300 iPod to a 13 year old kid, but apparently not enough scratch to pay the developers that create the apps.

I love reading shit like this, especially since I work for them now, and have to listen to my superiors go on and on all day about how perfect of a company Apple is.

I always say take what successful people do any copy it. Feed your supervisors shit about how awesome the company is and you'll move up faster - even if you know it's BS.

About 2 months ago, I work for Apple now doing phone tech support.

Turf, that's my plan. I have a BA in BS, and I'm planning on doing whatever I have to to move up the ranks. I even bought new knee-pads.

Yeah, well, Apple's iStore is in complete and total control of all apps sold for the iPhone and iPod Touch. It is a monopoly in a way, but not a classical one. It's their way of controlling the business. It is an interesting business model and one that drives independent developers to make apps because there is no marketing investment required and just about anybody can hit it big.

Apple has a legal responsibility to pay developers on time. There is no getting around that. However, I think it is understandable that they are behind given the huge boom in sales and the unprecedented growth in developers and apps that are available. I doubt that Apple has been able to grow their accounting services fast enough to keep up with the demand. There is also the possibility that they have cash flow problems and are not able to turn the money over fast enough.

Anyway, the iStore business model is well worth watching. It takes control over products in a way that is new and possibly very powerful. I am not sure it is a good thing in the long run, but it is interesting. There is no disputing the huge revenues that are being generated from this for both Apple and for independent developers.

An acquaintance of mine is an iPhone app developer. He hit it big with an app he made a couple months ago, and was sitting on $150 grand the last time I spoke to him.

So, point being, it's capitalism. Make a nice app, and you can make quite a bit of money. Given that you can develop an iPhone app for pretty much free (if you have lots of spare time and some skills), it's a pretty good deal, and I don't think many developers are feeling shortchanged.

EDIT: read the article. While shitty, that situation is not rare. Marketing and the app store are two completely different branches of the company, and don't share the same money pool.
