The difference between your uncle and your dads friend and my dad is that they were in the special forces and my father was not. When it comes to deployments the special forces are a different ball of wax. My father was just in the regular Air Force. I am not saying that he had it easy over there but he wasn't in the special forces. This year will mark the the forty-second year since he returned from Vietnam and he still will not talk about what happened over there. The only way I will ever find out is to send off for his service records after he dies. The father I grew up with was a different man than he would have been had he never been sent to Vietnam. I have heard stories about the man he was before he left but the same man did not come back because these stories are vastly different and he was almost 30 when he got back. He had been in the military for eleven years when he was deployed. He wasn't some eighteen year old kid. I can only imagine the damage it did to those guys because they were still kids and at least my father was a full grown man. The difference then and now is these kids are having to go back three, four, and five times and we still have another two years before we are supposed to get out of Iraq and God only knows how long it will be before we can leave Afghanistan. During Vietnam soldiers had eighteen months between twelve month deployments. I think we should stay in both countries as long as we are wanted and needed but its going to take more troops in Afghanistan then we currently have to do it right and not continue fuckups of the President Bush, Vice President Channey and former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. If we keep sending the same troops back over and over again especially with only twelve months between eighteen month deployments something is going to break. With the structure of deployment and rest back in Vietnam, three tours would have been the most my father would have been sent on. I used to work with a couple of guys who spent three tours in Vietnam. One was a Marine who volunteered for his and the other was a crew chief on a Huey and people who flew helocopters or on them were in high demand. One time the Air Force tried to get my father to take a Warrant Officer's commision to fly Hueys and he told them, "Hell No!"
Holy F-ing North Korea!

Yeah hes one of the nicest guys you will ever meet, to look at him you would never think he would have been a seal, kinda tall and skinny (still really frickin strong though) He will talk about some of the stuff he did, nothing to detailed, but I guess much of it is still classified or was 10 years ago the last time I saw him.
He will kick your ass though, my dad always told me the story about how Dan Cleared a bar by himself, because some dude was messing with him and tried to fight him and eveyone wanted a try after he kicked the shit outta the 1st guy.Leave a comment:

man thats kinda fucked up. think of the shit he saw to make him like that... thats really to bad.^^^^^^^^^^^^^
My uncle spent 3 tours over there, Special Forces, (Rangers, I dont know any more than that he has and will never speak of it) one of my dads buddies was a seal and was there 67-71 I think, he still has to sleep in a separate room from his wife and she has to wake him up with a really long stick, been that way since he got nearly 40 years he has nearly killed her in his sleep due to night mares to this day.Leave a comment:

During Vietnam my father only spent one tour there. Too bad many of our soldiers can't say that today. It will be an interesting fact to find out in the next few years how the rate of PTSD in Iraq and Afghanistan compares to Vietnam.

sorry mad this is for the chic
I understand all that, Really I do
the army has around 400,000 active, that includes grunts, support personnel and every thing. thats less than peek deployment of army and Marines durring Vietnam buy 150k.
And mad: you remember how the Iranians beat Saddam in the early 80's dont you. Millions and millions of Muslims armed only with a cotton towel on the head and copy of the Koran, over ran and routed the 4th largest and one of the best equipped armies in the world at the time. Is say we let the jews off their chain and let them handle the crazy Muslims in Iran.Last edited by mrsleeve; 05-30-2009, 03:44 PM.Leave a comment:

The fact that we did not have enough troops to go to war in Iraq in the first place. If we were going to go into Iraq whether you think the decision to do it was right or wrong we should have taken at least 500,000 troops so we could have locked the country down and put the fear of god into anyone wanting to start an insurgency. If a woodbee insurgent knew he was going to get a bullet between his eyes the second he stepped out of line then maybe a lot of them would have thought twice before doing it. The first thing you have to have to even start to form a democracy is peace and stability. The fact that the Pentagon has for years been phasing out boots on the ground to pay for technology. Stop loss, the fact that the Pentagon is taking personnel from the Air Force, sending them to infantry school and deploying them, extended deployments, multiple deployments, The fact that we don't have any troops to supplement the thirty or so thousand that we already have permenantly staioned in South Korea should the North ever decide to cross the thirty-eighth. If we get into another major war whether it is by choice or not there is going to be a draft unless a lot my mother and fathers are willing to volunteer their sons to go fight. To top all of this off there are some in the Neo-con community that would like to take on Iran. The number of troops required to take on Iran would probably quadruple the number that should be in Iraq. This would be if you wanted to do it right. I am sure there are neo-con idiots who thing we could just throw a few thousand more troops than we have in Iraq and march right in but Iran is much bigger, more radical, and has three times the population of Iraq.
