I dont know what the fuck ford was thinking when they geared those trucks.. the 6 is pretty decent, but the gearing in those trucks is a fuckn joke, slow.. cant use 5th gear on hills.... fuckn sad.. My buddy has a rebuilt new 4.9 and it WONT GO UP the 210 in 5th gear....its a reg cab short box to..... with some gears it might be alot better, but why not a 5.0 swap? im sure that the 5.0 and 4.9 would have the same milage since you have to have the 6 stomped all the time.
Keep in mind I live in California, we have mountains and shit, its not miserable flat.

It was a lovely truck tho. so damn roomy inside. It was so much cab space. my girlfriend was mad when I got another e30 as a replacement... (if you know what I mean)

The 5.0 has exactly the same torque output as the 4.9 and the gas mileage is quite a bit worse. I had a 4.9 5-speed as my first vehicle. I loved it!
