In AL we don't have anything. You can get a rail buggy licenced for the street here. Its awesome.
Certainly no front plate. You can probably get away with not having any plate at all for years.

Damn... My friend was chillin with his girl in his tinted A4, waiting for some friends in the parking lot of the coffee shop, and a cop rolls in and starts giving him shit for his euro plate and tints. The 5-0 proceeds to pull my friend out of his car, call in 3 other cruisers (and the K-9 unit) to search his car.

protect ya neck... shit's going crazy here in suburbia.

I've gotten 7 no front plate tickets, between an offroad truck, a fiberglass front bumper (don't know what I was thinking) on the e36, and a ddm (no provisions for american plate) bumper on the e36. I ziptied one on the offroad truck and got the ticket dropped, all the rest stuck. $115 a pop in NY

I just got screwed myself, but more hardcore and kinda my fault, but now the cops know my car. My 2002 will be rarely driven, but it's going to stand out like a sore thumb.

at least you can get fix it tickets down there. In WA it is a regular ticket. And in my county no front plate is a $216 fine, ask me how I know.

                So lets get this straight......

                1) It is illegal to have no front plate in California
                2) It is illegal to have a smoked rear plate in California
                3) You have no front plate and drive in California
                4) You have a smoked rear plate and drive in California

My question is what makes you think the rules don't apply to YOU? If you feel they are lame or not, they are there to be followed, or be prepared to be pulled over.

Ya they were just fix it tickets, so I put my CA plate on and put stock tail lights on and got the ticket signed off by my local PD, and paid the $50 fine ($25 each). Kind of a hassle, but the price you have to pay. I don't have a problem paying the fine as it is illegal, but I was a little frustrated by how the police officer pulled me over. Even the police officer who signed my ticket off said it was a bit ridiculous.

Weird, we don't have to go to court or pay any fine. Just flag down a cop, he signs it, mail the ticket in.

Similar in CA, BJ.... you have 45 days IIRC, gotta have a cop sign it off (unless CHP wrote it, then CHP has to sign it off) and pay the $15 fine.

Any LEO can sign it off and it's $25 for each infraction.

CHP has to sign off CHP's tickets, Though you could be correct on the dollar amount.

I went through this about a month ago. I got pulled over by CHP (off of the highway btw), and got my tickets signed off by my local PD. The CHP officer even said any LEO can sign it off.
The dollar amount was $10 until January 1 of this year, then it was increased to $25 for each violation. Ask me how I know.

Very odd.... When I had a fix it ticket, it was written by a CHP officer. I had to go to the CHP station to have them write it off since local PD's would not. CHP officers do not have to stick to highways, a lot of people believe that they do. They patrol highway and work with allied agencies patrolling streets as well. Depending upon the size of your city and how their PD staffing is looking, you may not see them on the streets much.
