how much is a rail pass?
if i had a month of free travel. I'd go to a main ryan air hub and just pick a place to go that sounds cool and is cheap.
watch out though, if you check a bag it can only be like 15kg. it's a 8 euro fee for every 1kg over. If you use a visa, it's a 10 euro fee.
tickets are cheap, but they hammer you with fees. you MUST read the fine print and see what you can leave behind.
you can see some cool country side with a train.
If i were single, i'd see the western countries, then i'd go straight to an eastern country. like latvia or budapest hungary. your dollar streatches MUCH MUCH farther there.
the ring is a must, don't even think about not going on it. Hahn airport is only 40 minutes away and is a major ryan air hub. But don't rent a car from hertz or sixt and take it to the ring... they know where you go (i'm banned from renting from sixt)
italians are hot but rude
french are good looking
spanish INMO look like euro trash
easter girls are the best

I spent about $3k over 5 weeks including air fare and i moved around a lot. Flew to spain from germany for like 80E. took trains between paris and amsterdam and munich. The rail pass is not that economical, there are still fees (about 20euro) each trip. I dont plan on buying another one. Buses are cheap for short trips ( say amsterdam to antwerp).
Its true about the water. It is a bit suspect in some cities, just stick to beer 8)--Will

Might want to use a combination of air + rail to get around. Rail travel is lots of fun during the summer, there are plenty of young people from all over the world travelling around on trains.
Granted, it's been a few years since I last travelled in Europe, but I would take night trains on longer trips- I paid a little extra for a "couchette" sleeper and that saved me a little $$ on hostel stays. You wake up in the morning and you're at your destination. Just pay attention to where you are, I had to jump off a train as it was pulling out of the station I was supposed to get off in one time because I woke up late and had to scramble to get my stuff and get off the train.
Also keep in mind that if you fly from city to city, you'll end up at the airport, which is sometimes a good distance from the city center and it can cost you some money to get there. Train stations are almost always near or in the city center.
Even in London there are cheap places to eat- just be creative and do your research. Many hostels have a continental breakfast included in the price- be sure to take advantage of that. For lunch you can grab some good food at a market or supermarket and have a little picnic- eating in a park or town square. Many restaurants have a set price dinner special which is often a really good deal- again, ask around and do your research so you know what places to check out.
If you're going to be in one country for a while, you might want to consider renting a car. I'd advise staying out of the really crowded cities but as long as you're cautious you should be OK.
Like I said, I'm not sure what the costs are these days, but I would think you could go for at least 2 months on $5k without too much difficulty.

I did the whole europe trip thing with the GF and we spent around 3grand each (including plane tickets and rail passes). We stayed for 3 weeks, though not as cheaply as we possible could have.
Hit eastern europe if you want some cheapness. We hit a bunch of capital cities and left europe feeling like we didnt really do anything, so keep that in mind. Honestly, we only used like half of our eurail 'travel days' so it ended up not being worth it. Are you trying to see as many countries as possible? or enjoy a few for 5 or 6 days each
