E46 Question

In my brothers 2004 330i ZHP the DSC light suddenly came on and it will not shut off, as if its in permanent "off" mode. Also at the same time, the orange brake tell-tale came on in the instrument cluster and stays on. What could this mean and why? Thank you all for your help.

Most likely one of the speed sensors in one of the wheels went by-by. The best thing to do is to take it to the dealer or a good independent shop with the BMW diagnostics stuff and get it scanned. It will be worth the cost to identify what is wrong before you throw parts at it.

Thank you, kind sirs. I did not post on E46 fanatics because I dont want to cheat on r3v, lol. Nah plus I know someone here ill have the answer and its not a life or death kind of thing. Brakes still work and all that. Any more ideas would be appreciated too as to the possibilities.

It could be the sensor or the steering rack angle sensor needs to be recalibrated.

probably a bad ABS sensor, low brake fluid, or the "rack angle sensor" like he said-- but I kinda doubt that one.

Having worked at a dealership (parts, not a tech) those are two of the likely problems. It has been a few months, but there is a 3rd possibility, I forget what it is. I have to swing by the current unemployment supporter tomorrow anyhow, I'll ask one of the techs if its not solved by then.

Bad abs ecu is the third possibility or at least one I'm seeing occasionally on customer cars. It's rare but it does happen. That's your worst case scenario.

Steering angle sensor. 70% sure. known problem on e46's. Small possibility its a wheel speed sensor but not likely as those rarely fail. Also small possibility it is the ABS pump itself.
