wait and get what you want
If you look for a while, you could find a genuine Porsche 356 for low money. But if you want a "kit", get a 550 spyder...imo.

Kit cars are an excellent way of owning classic styling in a fun and drivable package. You can do some personalizing to the car with out concern to staying stock and can tinker with out having to strive for perfection.
The Intermecanica 356 cars made here in Vancouver are excellent, more drivable and more reliable than the original.
I lust after the 550 spyder kit car, which is as close to perfection as I can imagine. Owning the original has little interest to me I just don't play in that sand box.

This is close and only $3,500 for the kit, it just bolts right up to a VW pan. Its a 550 speedster though so the pan is way to long.

Something I didn't know about the replicas: You can build them about 300 pounds lighter then a real one. ~1500 lbs.
So put in a 150 HP vw motor - and you have a screamer.Leave a comment:

I haven't posted in awhile but found this thread and figured I would give my two cents.
I feel that it really depends on the car being copied that makes a huge difference in this debate. If your trying to build a kit car after something that was a mass produced vehicle then things usually get more complicated. Lots of mass produced vehicles were more thought out during the design process, uni-body and sometimes made mostly by machines. Trying to duplicate the design and build a kit car of equal standards would be very very difficult.
Lots of the kit cars being offered are based off of older sport cars. These particular cars were almost kit built from the get go. Some of these cars were built in small numbers at a time and sometimes even built in small warehouses. With the technologies we have now its not uncommon to build a kit car light years better than the original. Will they be the real thing, no. Can they out perform the originals in many ways, yes.
Don't get me wrong here, there are many cars that should probably not be built as a kit. Some of these newer Lambo kits as of the late are just plane ridicules and will never even come close to the real thing. A Cobra however was very much home built to begin with and make great candidates.
Sorry if most of this came off retarded but its the best way I can explain what I'm talkin about. I truly think kit cars can be made just as good if not better than the originals, It just depends on the car being built.

Fidhle and George, it is late and this has gone on long enough. Can't we all just get along, hold hands, sing kumbaya and say "when in Rome"? You guys like kit cars, I don't. big deal...
I mean, I can sling poo like the best of primates, but this is getting old. And no one likes old poo...
PS: no I don't have any super-swoopy aircraft anything in my car, The federal government looks down on using their stuff in personal projects. In fact it is just a good ol' eta (snicker all you want)Last edited by RainierHooker; 07-19-2009, 11:12 PM.Leave a comment:
