Yes, my friend is a moron. I told him to be patient and do his research before rushing into a kit-car. He didn't take my advice and now he wishes he had.
I'm sorry if my opinion hasn't helped this thread, I merely tried to answer the question as to why I personally didn't like kit cars. I answered, and I got flamed. That's fine, I have thick skin.
Please don't take my posts as a derision against all kit cars out there. I know they have a place in the auto-world, that place just isn't my garage. If you want one, great, the same thrill that someone gets from building a kit is what I get from turning a tired old car into a gem. To each their own.
I'm a tech too. I have worked on VAG, BMW, Daimler-Benz and other cars since I was 13. I don't anymore since I now work on really, really expensive things like helicopters and airplanes. But I don't think that the fundamentals of auto-repair have changed much since I left that part of my life.
There you go, something you can enjoy too.Comment

Except in that same post I gave a link to a place that sells exactly what the OP was asking about. If my whole point was to shit on the thread I woudn't have done that would I?
I realize that the gods of the interwebs don't like it when there is a diference of opinion, but I went out there anyway. Anyway, since I haven't given anything usefull, except answering the questions asked by the OP and by later posters, I guess I'm done with this thread.Comment

Fidhle and George, it is late and this has gone on long enough. Can't we all just get along, hold hands, sing kumbaya and say "when in Rome"? You guys like kit cars, I don't. big deal...
I mean, I can sling poo like the best of primates, but this is getting old. And no one likes old poo...
PS: no I don't have any super-swoopy aircraft anything in my car, The federal government looks down on using their stuff in personal projects. In fact it is just a good ol' eta (snicker all you want)Last edited by RainierHooker; 07-19-2009, 11:12 PM.Comment

I haven't posted in awhile but found this thread and figured I would give my two cents.
I feel that it really depends on the car being copied that makes a huge difference in this debate. If your trying to build a kit car after something that was a mass produced vehicle then things usually get more complicated. Lots of mass produced vehicles were more thought out during the design process, uni-body and sometimes made mostly by machines. Trying to duplicate the design and build a kit car of equal standards would be very very difficult.
Lots of the kit cars being offered are based off of older sport cars. These particular cars were almost kit built from the get go. Some of these cars were built in small numbers at a time and sometimes even built in small warehouses. With the technologies we have now its not uncommon to build a kit car light years better than the original. Will they be the real thing, no. Can they out perform the originals in many ways, yes.
Don't get me wrong here, there are many cars that should probably not be built as a kit. Some of these newer Lambo kits as of the late are just plane ridicules and will never even come close to the real thing. A Cobra however was very much home built to begin with and make great candidates.
Sorry if most of this came off retarded but its the best way I can explain what I'm talkin about. I truly think kit cars can be made just as good if not better than the originals, It just depends on the car being built.
