Since no one else is going to to this, here are links to all of the 356 Kit builders out there (aside from intermeccanica which I already posted):

    http://www.cswspeedster.com/ -kits start at $17900

    http://www.beckspeedster.com/ -kits start at $18995

    http://www.thunderranch.com/ -kits start at $9995

Something I didn't know about the replicas: You can build them about 300 pounds lighter then a real one. ~1500 lbs.

So put in a 150 HP vw motor - and you have a screamer.

This is close and only $3,500 for the kit, it just bolts right up to a VW pan. Its a 550 speedster though so the pan is way to long.

Kit cars are an excellent way of owning classic styling in a fun and drivable package. You can do some personalizing to the car with out concern to staying stock and can tinker with out having to strive for perfection.
The Intermecanica 356 cars made here in Vancouver are excellent, more drivable and more reliable than the original.
I lust after the 550 spyder kit car, which is as close to perfection as I can imagine. Owning the original has little interest to me I just don't play in that sand box.

wait and get what you want

If you look for a while, you could find a genuine Porsche 356 for low money. But if you want a "kit", get a 550 spyder...imo.

As much as I want a 356, I'm not sure getting an original would be the best idea, since I would be modding the hell out of it.

OutLaw KIT 356 FTW. I absolutely love the idea. Cause outlawing a real 356 would be pure blasphemy. And im not that rich to have two of them. Thats all i have to say. Links to come after i chat with the PCar guy in the family.

And you can't get a rusted dented 356 tub (no suspension/ drivetrain) for the price you could build a decent E30 for

356/550, factory 5 racers, Ultima GTR are pretty much the only kit cars anyone should be making!
I'd rock a modern 356 around S.D. or similar place w. like 5 tools in the trunk not giving a fuck!

Some of the 250 GTO kits are pretty sweet too.

Let me tell you....this car is awesome! Who cares if it's a kit? The fit and finish, driveability, etc it awesome! It's a modern car in an old style body.
