I'm convinced that most welding/construction accidents are caused by others stupidity. I went to a vocational school, boces for anyone in the area, for two years for welding and I can't tell you the amount to time kids caught got hurt. One time I was talking to a kid from the electrical class next door, we're by a group of people talking, one kid has an oxy/acetylene torch going, he stands up from his work calls someone else fat. Said fat kid pushes him, with a lit torch in hand, and proceeds to stumble, pressing the torch on the electrical kids arm and hitting the oxygen lever at the same time. Skin went flying. I used to get flash burn all the time from dumb asses setting up right next you you while you have an arch and then striking an arch without telling you they were there. You lift you mask to check your work and you got some kid arch welding in your face.

as much as i am not happy with what happened, it was not really the guy who blew off his dust's fault. we were packed in too tight (the shops fault) and there is a reason why the codes say that there must be either a physical barrier like a fire resistant/spark proof curtain, or a minium or an air curtain to keep the dust from going between stalls. either would have prevented the whole thing. the responsability falls on the shop not being up to code, phoenix fire not inspecting the building for 15+ years, city of phoenix not inspecting the building at all or properly, and the business just not giving a shit.

welding is something that could really fuck you up if you don't give it the respect it deserves. along with the obvious burns to the eyes and skin, there is fumes from welding certain metals or certain coatings, exposure to heavy metals that get into your blood stream from welding them. lots of ways to hurt yourself or others

I don't know the name of em but we were always supposed to use those yellow UV screens. There were like 3 of them and 30 kids.

My dad is a steamfitter/ x-ray certified arch welder for the local 638, I know all too well the dangers. Apparently there is a large chance he will develop Parkinson's disease later in life because back in the day they had know idea the affects of welding galvanized steel. That and the fact that he was working while asbestos was still being used.

welding galvinized SUCKS!!!! even through a resperator the fumes still seep into your skin and make you at least temperarly sick. long term exposure is bad news. i feel for your dad. i have had to weld on galvinized before and it sucks to hack for a couple of days along with the headaches and dizzyness.

He apparenly doesn't do it on a regular basis, but when they do they have have to wear suits.

To keep up this topic, and stay on the thread topic I'll share a little anecdote:

My dad's working at the port authority a few years back, and there are these two guys who have to move gangboxes filled with tools and arch rod up a couple flights of stairs. For reference a gang box is about 3 feet tall, 3 feet wide, and 6 feet long, made of steel. Welding rod comes in about 14" by 4" by 4" and weighs 50 pounds a package, imagine a gangbox filled with it. The service elevator of this building is all the way around the back, so these guys have to walk all the way around the outside, so pretty much 1/2 a block west, a block north, 1/2 a block east, just to get to the back of this place, that's a lot of goddamn walking. About halfway through the day these numbnuts get tired of pushing these things 2 blocks to the elevator just go go up one floor. They've been eying the escalators all day and finally said fuck it lets try it. One man in front, one in back they get this box on the escalator. Everything's going fine and they even make it to the top. The guy in front makes it to solid ground and the box levels out and half of it lands on solid ground, unfortunatly the lighter half. As it settles the weight shifts and tips back down, in a panic the first guy starts pulling, and the guy on the bottom just hops the rail to the escalator next to it. First guy can't hold it and lets go. This couple hundred pound box goes sliding down the the escalator, hits the bottom and plows some poor schmuck just walking through the port authority, shattering his legs. Needless to say these two numb nuts where instantly fired, and in a humorous turn of events the poor schmuck turns out to be a lawyer. Needless to say there were multiple lawsuits filed.

Greg, I'm going to ship my car out to you, which you will then put a fresh coat of Bronzit on. I will then fly out and make a road trip home.

My first job when I was 15 was at Baskin-Robbins. I got fired from there for melting 40 gallons worth of ice cream and several ice cream cakes.

Basically, at the end of the night we were supposed to turn the lights off in the dipper cases. The switch to turn them off was a 3 position rocker. The top position was lights on, freezer on, middle was lights off, freezer on and bottom was both off. Needless to say, it got pushed one click too far and a whole dipper case melted. Also, apparently the freezer that held all the cakes got left open as well. The doors had those big latches like what was on old refrigerators so they tended not to close very well.

I'm actually not even sure if it was me or the girl I was working with that night. She got fired too, so... I hated that job though, I was glad to be fired.

Other than my last job, the two previous jobs I had went out of business. The first was a CAD drafting place and when the housing market dropped, we ran out of work. The second was a hobby shop that had just opened. The husband of the owner was a plumber and lost his job due to the housing market as well. Because they had just opened the hobby shop, they hadn't quite gotten to the point where it could support it self, and they went bankrupt.

Life really sucks sometimes, you know?
