The first custom bikes pictured are not from the 1990s. Skip 20 more years. In the late 1980s and in the 1990s, the trend was not about rad bikes, but race bikes. And most stayed stock (except for 4-1 headers) as they were so great out of the box.

Basically you are looking for 1970s' Cafe Racers, which was all the craze in the late 1970s.
Brake harder. Go faster. No shit.

        The thread is title PRE-90's.

Cafe racers and flat trackers started in the 50's.

And yes, I'm talking built, not bought: cafe's, bobbers, flat trackers, etc.

        No stock. Minimal plastic.

That's what I love about 70/80's bikes, you can get them for DIRT cheap.

My buddy bought a 79 (i believe) Yamaha xs650 for $400, running. He bought new tires, shocks, brakes, seat, some other odds and ends, and upgraded the heads to bump it to a 750. After all that he only had $1300 into it, including purchase price. Added some elbow grease and some paint and this is what it looks like now:

That bike plus the yamaha above's paint scheme would kick ass. Anyone know offhand what tires those are?
