Some people just do not need to be on the road.

So there I was driving my 02 home from work today in a nice steady rain. I'm just driving along minding my own business when I come up on a slower moving vehicle(no surprise there), after following this beige Toyota Camry for about a mile or so, we're going over a bridge over some rail road tracks. The Toyota then starts drifting into the oncoming lane. I'm just like "WTF, is this person asleep?", so I honk my horn a couple times. The Camry just keeps going, scrapes along the guardrail, and continues driving in the wrong lane. By this time we're over the small bridge and I see traffic coming towards us. I'm on my brakes to distance myself from the inevitable carnage about to ensue. The camry goes head-on into the front right corner of a late model Ford Ranger pickup at about 40mph. *facepalm*.... I pull into some person's yard to get out of the road and get out to make sure everyone was O.K. I went to the pickup first and the lady was fine, then went to the camry, and lo and behold, was a very oblivious seeming elderly woman who must've been at the youngest in her late eighties... She's O.K. but then she starts trying to leave! I get her to stay and a few minutes the cops show up. The first cop pulls around the accident scene and parks his car, at this moment the old lady hits the gas in reverse and starts backing up right towards the cops drivers side door right as he's getting out of his car, thankfully he noticed and jumped ack in the car before she smashed into the cruiser. So I'm stuck there for another hour filling out a report and waiting for the cars to get cleared out of the road. This kind of shit really pisses me off. There was absolutely no excuse for that woman being behind the wheel of a car, something that, used improperly, can very easily become a deadly weapon. If anyone thinks that driving is a right, they're out of their damn mind. Diving is a PRIVILEGE, one that should only be granted when individuals can show they are capable of doing so in a safe manner. People like this are a danger to those around them and have no reason to be out driving around and ruining people's days, or worse, causing unnecessary deaths.

I absolutley agree, being a motorcyclist I am all to often directly in the line of danger from thses kind of people. It truely needs to be like so many other countries; where driving is an privilage, people just take it for granted here.

This is going to turn into a major bashing old people fest, but at times I agree with you. That's pretty extreme and I can't say that I've seen that shit before. What really annoys me are the people that insist on driving 15mph under the speed limit everywhere. where it be on the highway or on a city street where is already 25mph. Last year I damn near rear ended a older guy doing 35 on the highway at night. You don't realize how fast you come up on these people until your already there.

Personally, I don't care how old a person is. Even if you're in your 70s or 80s or whatever, if you can show that you are still a safe and capable driver then by all means I think you should be able to get a license if you so wish. But I also think that after a certain age, driving tests should be administered once a year, for the safety of everyone on the road. I believe something like this has actually gone into effect recently here in fL, but I don't know for sure.
