    Hey portland/PNW guys...

Me and my wife are looking to move and portland is one out of 4 cities we're looking at. Would you recommend it? I skateboard so it's obviously appealing to me. We also both hate the heat. Any info I should know? How's the BMW scene up there?

We're planning on looking for jobs there in about 7 months if that's the city we choose.

Weather is good. Rainy for quite a few months. It's hot when it's suppose to be (well sometimes) and cold when it's suppose to be. BMW scene? E30 picnic! Tons of e30 enthu. around here. Portland is pretty rad, but I couldn't see myself living there. I prefer a smaller city. Oh, and we have the infamous burnside, which smells like pee. But tons of good skate spots. Everything you'd want to skate, is in Portland.

Care to outline why you wouldn't want to live there?

I lived downtown for three years. It's a very livable city. VERY CLEAN too. Has all of the metropolitan amenities, but still "neighborhoody"... kind of San Francisco-esque in that regard. I only moved into the suburbs bc my friend has a 4000sqft house that we're renting for a redic cheap amount.

Winter = 40s and rain (we usually get a dusting of snow once a year)

        Summer = 80-90 and sun

My dad moved to Houston about five years ago from Portland and can't stand to leave every time he comes to visit. It's like he forgot what blue skies looked like.

There's a big skate scene here. Obviously there's the Burnside bowls, but the Newberg park is like 20 miles South.

Housing prices have become more reasonable in the past year or so as well.

BMW scene up here is great. PNW Picnic = largest e30 meet in the world.

It's a very young city, but very friendly.

So you guys don't get much snow there? I had always assumed that because of the heavy moisture that you guys got a lot of snow. I want to make a trip to the PNW someday. It's the only section of the country that I've never visited, mainly just because it's so far out there away from everything.

I can't wait until I'm able to move somewhere with young people, I'm sick and tired of dealing with washed up baby boomers that just complain about everything and how good it USED to be.

the only reason I wouldn't want to live there is because I am absolutely horrible with directions. Aka, I get lost easy. Portland is just too big for me, if I were to live there. Plus, I just graduated HS. I like visiting Portland, don't get me wrong. But I would get lost every single day, and that would suck. Everyone does fine with getting around. I have no sense of direction lol

Thanks for the info - but I'm not too worried about it. Houston is as big as some states.

haha yeah, Portland will seem like a quaint town to you.

It rarely gets cold enough to snow here. At least in the valley where Portland is. The Cascade range just to the east gets a lot. Superb skiing/snowboarding here.

Random question: Is portland susceptible to tidal waves?

What? We're like 50+ miles away from the coast... and have a mountain range in between.

I live in Corvallis, about an hour and a half away from Portland. I cannot recommend it enough. My brother lived there for quite a while, its a very nice city. Too big for me, but for someone from Houston it would be great. Don't rule out the idea of living in a suburb like Beaverton or Gresham either. Good luck with your search.
