You're crazy if you think Portland's traffic is "10x" worse than Seattle's.

Seattle is a completely awesome city and I've had a blast every time I've been. Portland just seems more friendly and cosmopolitan... might have something to do with the size.

        I really like Portland overall.
Summers can be hot. But they only last a month or two. The rain is cold (the way it's supposed to be).
Car following up here is pretty big in general.

How far is Mt. Hood from downtown Portland. What's the skiing like and how many places are there in a 2 hour radius

It's probably just under two hours up to the resorts on Mt. Hood. There are two really good ones up there, and one fairly decent one. You can ski all year 'round up there bc of the glacier too. Boarding in July with shorts and a tshirt is pretty fun.

Mt. Bachelor is about a 3-3.5 hour drive.

Nice. My girl and I are planning on moving up there soon. We're hiking the Appalachian Trail for the second time in 2011' then taking the plunge up there. I'm originally from VT and I miss skiing badly, so getting closer is extremely important.
              Thanks for the great info

                      Sorry I had to.

I love the willamette valley. I think you will be happy here. The job market is slow though, so be prepared.

102 is super hot around here. 90 is where most people start really bitching.

But as soon as the sun sets, it goes right back down into the lower 70s... It's great!

108 is the record for Portland.

My dad lives in Houston and drives around Portland with no AC when it's 90+ bc he doesn't think it's hot.

If your wife has a lot of experience as an RN, talk to a recruiter here and see if she can land a job before you come (should be easy). They might pay for some of your moving expenses with the sign on bonus.

Portland is almost just as described by all the positive comments above. You have so much stuff with in two hours of you that you can find SOMETHING to do. If not, you aren't young enough :D. People are friendly, living is easy mostly. Medical field should be an easy place to find a job. The weather is ten times better than anywhere in Texas. None of that crazy humidity that you guys experience.
