cause you will get 20-25 mpg. as opposed to a honda civic dx 5 speed 40mpg.
its just a beater! just imagine the money you will save in gas in a year. you can use that cash towards your project E30

My old super-eta pulled down around 31mpg average, granted my current eta still has some consumption issues that I'm working currently.
No its not a civic, but an e30, especialy an eta or a 318, is fully capable of pulling down good mileage as long as they aren't modded to the gills, or driven hard. Just get as low gearing as possable and keep that pedal off the floor.

If you want something that will offer inexpensive cost of ownership (maintenance, insurance, gas), definately go the Japanese brand route. I would stay clear of any Honda or Acura cars since those seem to get stolen a lot and sold for parts.

I'd like to buy a second car so the E30 can be my tinkering platform - when that day comes the 'other' car will be Japanese. I only want to have one moneypit to worry about.

          That's my

I would get an E30. You know have parts and resources right here. Most people will give away stock parts, and info is everywhere.

If lucky, the E36 will die peacefully, in its natural habitat, and be given the prestigious honor of donating its parts to an E30

Get a 4-banger rice burner. I recently bought a civic for super cheap from my grandma. A month later I was hit in the driver fender and got 1500 bucks from insurance which i pocketed. If it was an e30 I would feel the need to fix it and make it nice. Naw mean?

2-4k for a DD is alot lol , might as well only spend 2 and save the rest. civic or corolla would get good gas but wont be that fun to drive, personaly fwd sux lol , find your self a 91+ 240sx , get an auto theres a higher chance youll find that than a 5speed. It gets pretty good gas and yet has power like a 325i.
