Attention. Tax revenue is down. How do you fill up the coffers?

Government investments? Other taxes? Raising VAT?
If I pay tax for something, I want to get something out of it.
I pay registration to fund road building/fixing, lights, everything that is associated with roads, driving, etc.

If they tell me I have to get a smog check to make sure my car doesn't assist in killing the planet that much, I go get a smog check, and I pay for it so the smog check people can keep their jobs and maintain the facilities.
If the government tells me they don't have enough income to balance the amount they are spending, I expect them to raise taxes. Or do something about the spending. Stop pumping incredible amounts of money into the military for example? (The US spends more money on the armed forces than all the other countries in the world combined)


If they tell me they need me to get my car smogged, I understand that. If they tell me I have to do smog check every year, I say bullshit. Tell me you don't have enough money, tell me straight you need more money from me, tell me I have to pay more taxes. Don't bullshit me.
And then I can decide if I want to pay higher taxes or not. If not, eventually you have to find another way to fix the budget deficit.
But don't lie to me and try to get money out of my pocket by saying it's for the greater good when you just want to replace the money that disappeared because you fucked up.

Yeah it didn't really work out as I planned. I hate trying to make sense when I'm drunk. Wait... let me try to reorganize things here:

1) I pay tax after my car to be used for things I need to be able to drive my car safely. (roads, signs, etc)

2) I pay tax after my income to pay for social services (social security, police, military, etc)

3) If they tell me the reason I need to get my car smogged is to lower emissions, I do it and I'm happy about it. But having yearly smog checks is clearly not for that reason, so I don't agree with this practice, that is all.

Yearly smog checks prevent people from installing non-CARB certified turbo systems on M42s. Also, a lot can happen in one year. Many people run their cars 25,000 miles, and it's entirely possible for something emissions related to fail in that time.

It is true, if you use your car that much something can go bad in a year. But I don't think that people who don't install a turbo on their car because of the yearly smog check would do it if the check was required every two years.

I might be just thinking about my situation when I put about 2-3000 miles on my car a year. But I'm sure there is a more money efficient way to deal with emission checks.

I am sure the school district will make an exception in your case. Just submit a letter informing them of your needs, and they'll get a bus with a startlingly short wheelbase to pick you up every day.

This forum cracks me up. Especially the posts pissing and whining about getting busted by the law for fucking up. There's two kinds of people in the world: the ones with valid insurance, driver's licence, registration, no pot in the car, quiet muffler w/ no chrome tip, near-OEM ground clearance, a big fat "I Support Nevada Highway Patrol" bumper sticker, a license plate that doesn't say "RACE ME" and a "Yes sir, no sir, how high sir?" attitude when pulled over - and then there's the other people. Which kind do you think gets hassled by the cops? Your choice.

Youre telling me? Whens the last time you went to court? Ive gone to court 3 times in the last month alone. Ive seen hundreds of people get called up and have their "driving without license" charge dropped because they got it taken care of. Its happened to me a few times. Maybe they just changed the law the other day, I was in court the 5th and 6th. They will drop it if you fix it. Assuming its not the 10th time youve gotten the same ticket. I believe it about the registration with new tag. I haven't gotten a new tag in a year or so, it was no where near 450 when i got a 2nd car a while back, but everything has skyrocketed. Either way the OP isnt in Florida.

Cops catch a lot of people for other shit that starts out with something like expired tags, non-working brake light, failure to signal, etc...

If you can't afford to pay $80 annually for your tags and then get a ticket for it, then you're mad at the wrong person...

My tags expired in February, and I was driving my car like that until last month. I didn't pass smog, and had to take care of a lot if things before I passed it, so every time they stopped me I just told them I'm going to the shop/smog place/dmv, so they always let me go.
However I too think this is just a money grab. Now in Cali you have to do a smog test to get new tags every year?! Thats about $100 dollars plus on top of everything else yearly, for nothing.
I got a new cat this year, lowering my emissions into almost sub-zero category. What on Earth could happen in one year that causes my car not be fit for street use? Srsly.

California is still bi-annual last I heard and I just registered my car earlier this month and no smog test until next year.

Oh cool:) I've had two cars registered here in Cali, but neither of them were mine for more than a year, but someone recently told me about the requirement changing to annual smog checks.
I'm glad it's not that way then:) And I hope it won't change in the future, if it's a proposed bill.
