What was the point of an "S/T?" I understand the S was the luxury version and had lots of trim and chrome and padding and leather, so it weighed more.
The T was the bare bones version so it was lighter. They put the S motor in a T trim and got a hot rod.
OK, but the factory could really do what it wanted with the shell and trim - they could (did) gut the shell so it was super light. The S motor they used for racing was more like a factory hot rod S, and sometimes a full 906 motor. It had the wide rear track and flares - that didn't come on an S. Plastic fenders and hood.
So why bother calling it S/T? Was that for homologation and class rules in GT? Did anyone police what the engine really could do?
Sorry for the Porsche trivia questions!
I dont know all the details....Im sure you can find it on a thorough search..or the early911s forum..
Im not sure its really correct to say the S was the luxe edition.
It was known as the hi po edition for sure, and all the upscale options were avail to ad on..$$$..but that was true of at least the E as well...even the T had S options avail to it.
it was uber cool how the factory made hot rods in house....
that being said...I cant imagine an early flared fat tired 911..w/ close to 300 hp....
Look into the ST built by TUTHILL FOR c . HARRIS...IT WAS FANTASTIC..HE THEN SOLD IT...
sorry bout the caps
