Yeah, seriously man, wtf? Have any info on the 917? That's a pretty close-knit community, I assume the dude is/was a collector of some sort.
Read that this AM, I think I heard about the 917K81 a while back, but I never knew much about it (or how unsuccessful it was, lol.) They pointed to the advancement in tire technology in that ten-year gap as a large part of the reason it did so poorly at LeMans, and apparently it was also significantly worse on fuel than the 936's. Wild stuff.Not a beautiful thing, really, but an interesting story about the 1981 effort to run a retrofitted 917 at Le Mans. Shows how fast technology outruns our old favorite cars..

Something I've learned is that relative to modern race (& "super") cars, the 917 was pretty far off the ground and had fairly soft springs. In photos and videos, you can see how much suspension movement and body roll there is.
That article points out how modern tires and downforce just twisted that old frame and suspension until it failed.Comment
