i pay myself first. i have a shit ton in investments,401's and property but im living like a pauper for the last couple years. just making it. the economy has really thrown a fucking to me. im still putting lots away but living like im broke.
I have about 4.5 months' income stored away. But that's 15 hours a week, $9 an hour (I'm a highschool senior). So just enough to get a couple stages done on my project car over the next year.
I've had to rebuild mine recently because I tapped 5K out of my emergency fund when a nice M3 came along that was more than I had saved at the moment. I've got 3500 in emergency savings right now. I have another 4k saved up so that when I move into another condo in the next couple of months, I can plop down cash for a new TV, couch, and mattress. I also have a Roth IRA that I started when I was 19 and have fully funded since I was 22. I avoid debt like the plague and pay cash for everything.

This is the way to do it. Been doing it this way and doing odd jobs to put more away and pay for stuff on my car.
the iraq nest egg is there and i am keeping it at a given balance w/ unemployment. i take care of our ridiculous HOA, car insurance, wireless bill, and my shrink and whatever after that is my own to play with.
early next year when i get to collect both UI and GI bill, things will be nice for a little while, and then it's back to living thin again.

I wish they made a decent documentary about what it's like for you guys out there. What's available either focuses on one small part of the big picture, or so badly distorts and exaggerates things that the whole thing seems so fictitious it feels like it may have never even happened (making it seem like the Western forces in Iraq are a bunch of Rambos). The closest thing I've seen to what I'm talking about is a show on CBC about the doctors/nurses that work Afghani military hospitals - showing that the soldiers are just young guys doing a difficult job in a dangerous environment and hoping to get home intact.
It's probably too much to ask for your perspective but if you've written about it elsewhere, I'd like to read it.
Savings!? I wnet out drinking with some friends tonight and after that had to chill until midnight when my direct deposit went through so I can eat. But I've been out of work and finally found something. I've realized I can live with a lot less than I have been doing so my savings is on its way up. My retirement fund has been steadily growing though. Once I hit retirement Corvette, and country club membership here I come.
