They're both private sites, so you need a membership (free, but I don't know if either is accepting applications right now). It's nice because they usually have what I'm looking for and the speed is always maxed out.

More then likely the torrent he downloaded was used as bait by some organization trying to find people who download stuff. You download the torrent and then they figure it out from there.

I really have no idea how it work though, I'm kind of just making an educated guess. The inter workings of the internets is a bit above my understanding.

it's not even that complicated...

load a torrent and then look at the "peers" tab and you'll see a list of IP addresses: everyone else you're trading data with.

i use torrentz.com- it searches a bunch of different torrent sites and gives you links to the sites that have the torrent you are looking for. i highly highly recommend it.

Well the document I received in the mail told me exactly what file it was, what movie it was, where I downloaded it from, when I downloaded it, all IP address information, etc. I downloaded this torrent, watched a few minutes, realized it was shit quality and I could watch it when it comes out soon, and deleted it moments later. That was on 17 September, the letter came on Saturday 24 October.
