The Somolie Pirates take a loaded supper tanker bound for the USA. Just a reason for speculators to drive up the price of oil more.

Exactly. Also, how hard is it to fight off a wooden skiff with an outboard? Couldn't they just carry a half dozen guns on board and shoot the pirates when they come near? How hard would that be? I know the pirates are armed too, but still, it doesn't seem like it would be that hard to defend a 500,000 ton tanker from a fucking rowboat full of skinnies.Comment

yeah, no. one tanker isn't going to do much, except maybe a short term spike. there is a huge surplus of both crude and refined products. Lots of idle capacity that isn't being used yet.
plus it's not like this tanker of oil, if it's not recovered, won't go back into the market. Unless the pirates are going to bury it on a sandy beach somewhere like a chest full of gold.Comment

The industry does not want to incur the costs of the security teams.
Industry is also against manning their crews for various reasons.Comment

Corvalis: you cant put weapons on merchant ships, while perfectly legal in international waters it becomes serious violations in many many many countries around the world, where weapons in other than the govt hands are life in prison offenses. Those ships would not be allowed into territorial waters or into ports in those countries. There are may issues with that idea
Yes I am big gun guy, and full belive in personal protection, most countries dont anymore and you have to abide by those rules to trade with them.Originally posted by FusionIf a car is the epitome of freedom, than an electric car is house arrest with your wife titty fucking your next door neighbor.

This always leaves me at a lose. What is to stop hiring 2 or 3 guys with a sniper rifle or a scoped M4A1 and when the pirates roll in.... lay it on heavy. Pretend nothing happened.
I don't understand. You can see them coming...Comment

Have you not heard of Undercover Pirates? It's lovingly called a Sting-@-Sea operation, quite a common practice.Comment

Going to sound racist but a small boat rolls up and has some AKs on board with what looks like Somali pirates shoot a warning shot into the boat a couple times...
When they roll up next to the boat with grappling hooks with an AK slung over their back... start shooting?
I understand them rolling up on a luxury yacht with a crew of 3, a cook and a rich couple and they rape and pillage but a super tanker? Can't defend itself because of international laws and then they can't 'dock' bcause they have weapons on board?Comment

They're not in it for what they can steal from the ships. They hold it for ransom. Oil is a valuable resource in any advanced country, so the ransom for a super tanker, they figure, is pretty high. The last time they took a US or US bound vessel though, didn't they end up getting owned by the military?Comment
