I think it's a lack of ambition, fear of failure risk/reward type thing, along with the opportunity to try to program kids that their way of thinking is superior.

Although I guess if parents did a better job instilling values in their children, the schools wouldn't be able to.
Lack of ambition? I don't know one person with a PhD (or any doctoral degree for that matter) who has/does lack ambition...

Risk/reward? You can't make a business out of everything. What do you say to the numerous individuals whom are dedicated enough to physical and natural sciences that they're willing to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars and dedicate decades of their lives studying it? PhD-level anthropology isn't a fall back plan for someone whose dream was a weed-whacker repair shop.

Your indoctrination theory isn't even worth rebutting...

My risk/reward comment was based on things taking a poor paying college job vs going at it in the real world.

But then I guess it's an argument on what one person constitues as success over another, etc.

I should probably get back to work.

Being that you guys tax payers are taking care of my salary.

EDIT: I obviously walked right into that. You used one specific field out of many to make your point.

Many college professors make $100,000+ with ridiculous benefits on top. How is this a "poor paying college job"?

I think the majority of people classify $100,000+ with an enjoyable lifestyle, as success.

Maybe a Tenured Professor at a big university in a big city with a high cost of living. These would probably also be professors who write the textbooks for their class and make money that way as well.

A quick search is netting everything from $50k avg (less than I make with 3 1/2 years in the job market in a very cheap market, with a complete joke of a degree) to $95k for a tenured professor with 20+ years of experience.

I'll see if I can dig up some concrete numbers, but I know from job postings at my Alma Mater (Oklahoma State University) starting salaries for most professors is in the $37-44k range. A decent salary in OK, but hardly "comfortable" to be sure. I know for a fact when I was looking at a job their (so I could stop my 170 mile round trip commute) when I moved back to Stillwater briefly, they wanted a PhD Psychologist to teach and run some of the research trials.

Starting salary = $34,960 for that job. This was mid-to-late 2007.

^^ why are you guys talking about college jobs? It's well known that regular professors are usually underpaid.

I was under the impression that we were talking about jobs "in the real world" with a college degree versus without.

Aw fuck you went and did it, now we get to see PB&J pull more facts out of thin air to support his argument.

I listed sources for a couple of my points. And the other ones are common knowledge to those who are well-informed with respect to current events.
