Kershaw, it's a folder anywhere on your computer that is monitored by the Dropbox program and synchronized across all computers you have set Dropbox up on. It's also web-accessible via a pretty slick interface, and has file revisions built-in, so you can revert to previous versions of files, recover files you delete, etc.

I've used it for about two years, use it instead of regular backups (I only keep the non-replaceable stuff in it, like personal files and schoolwork, not media, so 2GB is plenty), and it's pretty damn convenient.

I use it to host pictures for my sig/posts instead of photobucket/flicker/ect. It's much faster.

eh, i think i'll stick to my ftp. that too is "syncronized across all computers" because its accessible anywhere i have an internet connection, and i have 200gb of space. lol.

And is stores and actual copy of the file. So if your wi-fi is flaky, or goes down, you magically have the file. Can't do that with FTP.

lol dude. even if it runs in the background, it still needs to be downloaded. information does not appear out of no where. it just syncs up when you boot up your computer. so if you're connection is fubar'd it wont work.

i can see your point that if your connection goes down in the middle of the day, you still have your files. however, i just dont see that one point as worth it.

Communication breakdown between GG and Kershaw. Kershaw, he is just meaning that you don't have to make any kind of effort to download it... it just does it for you on all of the linked platforms. So if you put a file in there from your desktop in the morning, it will be on your laptop or phone or whatever later in the day, even if you pull it out and you are not connected to the internet at the time. Where if you had just uploaded it to your server and pulled your laptop or phone out later and had no interweb connection, you'd be screwed because you can't get to it right then.What client do you use on your phone BTW?

And I'm positive that GG understands what you are saying. But there are limitations to using an FTP client (on top of what I said earlier). You might want to listen to music or watch videos while you're at school on your phone. Rather than syncing your phone to add/change your movies or music (most people's music/video libraries exceed their phone's capacity), you can just drop whatever you want in to the folder and it'll be there on your phone later when you want it.

I also use it to easily share media with my family. I've set up a folder that my parents, siblings, in-laws, family friends, extended family etc. all use. Rather than teaching them all how to use an FTP client to upload shit to my server, I just set them up so there are sub folders for pictures, videos, documents, specific people, etc. and they can just drag and drop shit in there to share with everyone else. Way easier than emailing pictures, or relying on some online host or facebook or whatever.

Shit like that makes it useful. And it's free to an extent, so there's no need to be a hater for the sake of being a hater. Many of us have our own server, it does not make you special.
