    D40, D3000 or Rebel XS?

So I've got a broken point-n-shoot and some fundage burning a hole in my wallet, so I'm set on getting a DSLR.
I was pretty much set on getting a Nikon D40, but it seems that it has been recently replaced in the Nikon line-up by the D3000. The Canon Rebel was suggested to me as well.
What do all the camera gurus say?

Yeah, I checked out that site, which is one of the reasons why I was stuck on the D40. Unfortunatly I can't seem to find any local camera shops that still list them for sale, they have all gone to the D3000. I can find them online but after shipping and all that the D3000 is only marginally more expensive.
I'm driving through Ft Lewis tomorrow, and the last time I was there the PX still had D40s in stock, but that was before the holidays. Since the PX is tax free the cost difference is a little more motivating. If they still have them I'll probably pick up a D40 there. If not, I'll probably defer to the hive-mind's decision...

D40 is a great camera to learn on. The D3000 is good but so is the D40 + you can find really good deals on them used. Go used on a D40 and there is not tax!

          I think my brother's got a d40 for sale.

Have you made a purchase from www.blunttech.com recently?

I'd say punt the entry-level cameras in favor of a good used Canon 10D or Nikon D70/D100. My personal preference is Canon, but they both can do the same things, so it all comes down to how the camera feels to use, and how comfortable you are using it (control placement is the major advantage I think Canon has over Nikon).

^ Nikon's cameras are really light, lots of aircraft aluminum

I'd get a used d40 if I were you. Don't spend more than 300 on a complete kit. See how much you use the camera and what you're photography goals are before you invest more money into the hobby. I had a d40 for quite some time and just recently upgraded. *I much prefer Nikon's LOW end stuff to canon's low end stuff, just feels more quality to me.

(I shoot Nikon, but any other well known DSLR can accomplish the same things [pretty much] so use whatever you feel comfortable with. I recommend nikon or canon for the purpose of used gear availability)

You missed his "suttle" Colegrove reference. See the credit on the Nikon picture?

I heard you can use aircraft fasteners to save some weight and increase the shutter speed.

i shoot nikon, but I hate to say it, you're gonna hate it later if you get a d40/d60/d3000/d5000/d4000 because of the lack of AF motor.

With canon you get more camera for your money. That said, the big boys shoot nikon. :)

See if you can find a D50/D70/D80 cheap. They will be your best bet for getting a nikon. I shoot with a D80.
