D40, D3000 or Rebel XS?

    I bought a D40 to learn on, it's a great little camera with a lot of specific documentation and writeups. There are entire books written for the D40.

      With canon you get more camera for your money. That said, the big boys shoot nikon. :)

      See if you can find a D50/D70/D80 cheap. They will be your best bet for getting a nikon. I shoot with a D80.
      No AF motor is pretty annoying. But for me it kept me holding onto the d40 and investing minimally for a long time. I was able to really decide if getting nicer equipment was what I wanted and worth it to me. (Still upgrading... just switched) Also, the low end nikon stuff feels way better in the hand to me, the rebel feels like it came from toy's r us in my opinion.

          I agree completely. I think it's very important to buy a body that you feel comfortable holding. Go to bestbuy and decide what you like the feel of more, and what interface makes more sense.

            I don't know how experienced you are, but if you are just getting in to photography, why not buy a used d40? Save some money and if you do end up getting in to it you can upgrade when you outgrow the d40.
